Which would be a better carb for more low end torque/accleration for my Wag. The Holley Street Avenger or the Edelbrock Performer? I don't plan on doing any 4 wheelin so don't really need the Truck Avenger Carb. I plan on getting the Edelbrock performer intake. I want to break the 0-60 in 15 sec....ohh Ya! I know the Avenger costs more, but only the best for the Wag smile.gif

The evidence on this subject seems to be that you get what you pay for. The Truck Avenger is very much an upgrade from the Edelbrock Performer (which itself is a re-labeled, Weber-built, Carter AFB).

Remember, the Truck Avenger is a Street Avenger Series carb with a few extras for offroading, if ya don't need them, they won't get in your way. Do some research on the Street Avengers and see what you think.
I just freakin' love mine. I have owned Edelbrocks and many a Holley. Once dialed in, it is by far the best carb I have ever owned. Fuel mileage is better than I thought it would be as well, but I am running 2.73s right now.....

I thought the general consensus was that the Holleys are a PITA to get setup and the edelbrock/carters are a "bolt-on" and go type deal....just food for thought...as far as perfromance,

Ralph... thou speak blasphemy! Holley's remind me of a girl by the same name... high maintenance, easy to choke up and completely unforgiving. Edlebrock's the kinda of people you go bowling with, Holley's look so sweet but then they want nothing but attention.
Buy the 1406 and stick an offroad needle and seat in it. Forget the tuning fork... plug and play I say.
Have A Nice Day

When in doubt... KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid). Don't mind me, I'm just PO'd cause I budgeted this morning for taking the bed off... it's now 4PM and I finally got the last bolt off the stinking (literally) fuel tank. Pardon the pun but Dutch is venting!

Ah, the sweet simplicity of the virgins, whose dear, dear carburetors have never caused them to stall at high angles and at high altitude on Engineer Pass!

So, Ralph what carb do you run in the high altitudes????
And Dutch, IMHO I think carbs are kinda like women as well. Once you get used to maintaining one, you don't want to have to learn what it takes to keep another one happy.
From my experience, both Edelbrocks & Holleys are fine and don't have to be tinkered with, once set up correctly. But I think that is the key....setting it up correctly the first time. And then leaving it alone until you have to change the settings or secondary springs or jets or whatever.

timmirvin, the irony of my comment is that, firstly, Dutch bought his J10 from me a little over a month ago.
He's got a Carter AFB with off-road needle & seat assemblies, which I had previously re-jetted before coming to Ouray (I lived in Ohio at the time) for the FSJ Invasion last August. I ran with everyone on every trail in that truck, which except for exterior engine mods was bone stock and with 2.72:1 axles. But despite my claimed prowess with carbs, I was unable to climb the top of a trail called Engineer Pass at about 11k'.
Anyway, that carb was what I had on my last V8-equipped FSJ. I was green with envy to find that another member, derf, who purchased a brand new, in the box Holley manifold from me about a year ago, bolted a Holley Truck Avenger onto that manifold. And he has loved it.
And I'll tell you this: the FSJ's here last summer that were equipped with bone-stock 2150 carbs did very well. Impressive as all get-out, with their altitude compensators.
Except for River Beast, of course, but that wasn't exactly the carb's fault.
I'm currently running a stock Carter BBD on the 258 L6 engine in my 1982 Wag Ltd. (which I bought with the money Dutch gave me for the J10). It's a computer controlled carb, kind of interesting, and even has a jumper wire to ground when above 4k'in altitude. But I'm piecing together an EFI system, and daydreaming about a supercharger where the smog pump mounts.

If I was buying a manifold for street use, I would go with the new Air Gap. The Performer isn't highly regarded among AMC folks - they say the stock 1970 manifold flows better. I have heard rave reviews of the Avenger carbs too (Street and Truck).
