 I'm talking about the gas tanks. I realize these vehicles don't get good gas mileage, but why did they make the gas tank only 20 gallons? I average about 150 on a tank of gas and thats not completely empty. It's my daily driver and I hate going to the gas station every 120-170 miles to fill up. Why couldn't the engineers put in 2 20 gal. tanks or just one 30 gal. gas tanks? Does anybody else have this problem or am I the only dumba&$ that drives it daily?

I drive the '79 daily and if I don't make any extra trips all week I can go 5 days on a single tank, all of 220 miles if I'm lucky. Aerotank still makes tanks for our beasts and IIRC you can get a 40 gal main and a 40 gal aux...Now multiply that by $4/gallon:omfg:

It drives me nuts too man! I drove my red '91 to Spokane WA last week to pick a buddy up at the airport-one tank of gas round trip in any other car I have taken, but the Jeep required three fill-ups:banghead:

Try filling up diesel in a rig. But if ya get 10MPG that means ya can go 800 miles with out a fill up. So $320 isnt that bad. And we all know you will run out at the worst time and place.

How about a 19 gal tank on a J-truck? Even less with a replacement poly tank.

Ive ran out of gas once in my '79 and I over filled at 17.82 gallons. I get 9-10mpg so I get to fill up every 2-3 days. I roughly drive 60 miles a day for work and school.

I drove my J-10 home ~3,500 across the country from Arizona to New Hampshire and stopped every 250 miles for gas. That was many, many stops at the pumps in 7 days!

When I was driving it daily my work then was only about 10 miles from my house so it wasnt bad. I would hate to commute at 10 mpg :fsj:

I didn't know AMC had engineers? Hey, if you put a diesel in it, you'll double your range and keep that 20 gallon tank :p

What drains faster? The gas tank or your wallet?

I drive it daily, about 60 miles. I'm getting about 14 mpg at 70 mpg though, since I've altered my schedule to avoid traffic. No front shaft and a quadrajet might be helping out. Better than fuel injected, overdrive eq'd. Range Rovers and H2s. I'll take it.

sounds like you are only getting 8mpg if you can only go 150 miles per tank assuming you are filling 18 gallons each time. time to adjust that carb and do a tune up to eek out another 2mpg!

you can always get (find) one of the trailmaster overflow tanks, they are 25 gal and that would give you a range of 375 miles with your current gas mileage. food for thought.
