Hey guys need some advice, I have an '89 GW with NP229 32" tires. I have factory gears 3:31 and want to go to 3:73 for more power. I have a buddy that just swaped gears and is giving them to me, so heres the question, I have a locker (lock-rite) and one of the new 3:73's is a limited slip. First off can I run both these with the NP229? and second, what axle should I put them in? I was thinking lock-rite rear and LS up front for better steering but my buddy thinks the LS should go in back so we don't have to set up the gears (this one is a full axle swap-in) and lock-rite in front. Anyways any advice would be welcome. Thanks-Tim

Tim, what axles do you have in that rig? From 1980 and up, with some exceptions, you would have a Dana 44 front and AMC 20 out back. The gear sets are not interchangeable between the two models. What axles did the gears come out of? What model axle is the lock-rite for, and what axle did the LS come from? Find these things out, and I think we can get you going.

Dave- I have Dana 44's front and rear '89 GW. The gears both came out of dana 44's although I believe the limited slip has 19 spline axles, both of mine have 30 spline the lockrite is a 30 spline Dana 44. Thanks--Tim

If the limited slip is for a 19 spline Dana 44, then you can't use it. I think you'll be better off keeping your carriers and setting up the gears and keeping the lock-rite in the rear.
