I did some searching, but I'm still unsure of what I need to know. I'm going to be looking at a '89 Grand Wagoneer on Wednesday, and I need to know how to ID the axle. Specifically, what the codes for gear ratio and LSD/open diff and where they are located. I want to make sure I get LSD. :D Thanks in advance!

The only way to be sure is to open the pumpkin up and check. IIRC the only ratios availiable were 2.72 and 3.31 with the towing package. There may still be a tag in place attached to the bolts that will have the ratio stamped in it.

You can tell by jacking it up and counting driver shaft turns for one tire turn. No need to open up the dif.

Should be D44s front and rear. So hopefully it will still have the tags, the longer one tied by two cover bolts should have the gear ratio. if its an LSD it will have a smaller tag that instructs to used limited slip fluid only.
