Do those fuel additives out there really work? I saw an STP one that claimed to boost octane up to 10 points. And I bought a bottle of this stuff that is supposed to clean the carberator. Do these additives do anything? Or am I just pissing my money away?

Fuel injector cleaner does help clean fuel injectors and carbs, anything else is usually bull**** in a can. Octane booster is for if you have a high compression engine and can't get high enough octane fuel, so you have to boost the octane to prevent the fuel from detonating early from the higher compression.

I don't know if it will increase octane or not but back in the day an STP sticker would increase horsepower by 10.

Yeah, but that was GROSS HP. I'd say 7 HP is a more realistic number, unless you mean the hard to get High Output sticker.

I just got some AMSOIL PI cleaner to give a try. I try 'em all. Chevron, Seafoam. Don't know if they work or not, but hey, the additive guys' kids have to eat, too!!

I ran Seaform through my carb last summer to clean it out, poured it directly into carb while idling until it almost stalled out. I like to think it helped. Do you put it directly in the gas tank?
I know it made a great cloud of smoke!

I pour it straight down the chute, a little trickle at a time until it wants to stall, like you say. Then I dump the last ounce or so in, let it stall out, sit for 5 minutes, then start it up and white-out the neighborhood.

I always use it to clean up the gunked up messes that I tend to drag home. After that, a bottle of Techron every now and then keeps things clean. Ordered a case of Amsoil oil last week and thought I'd try a bottle of their new magic elixer. They claim a mileage increse of 2%. Let's see, on the Waggy, that would be like 300 feet maybe?

For general everyday use, it's probably counterproductive to add chemicals to your fuel unless you have an unusual condition, like trying to run 11:1 compression or non-hardened valve seats on today's fuel. Li'l Sis's GTO motor fits both of those niches, so she runs both octane booster & lead substitute all the time. She also has to clean the plugs about every thousand miles, and that's likely attributable to the goofy add-in chemicals.

I use Chevron Techron about once a year (just before an oil change, because unburnt bits of it sneak past the rings & dirty the oil) to keep the injectors clean. Carburetors are less dependant on cleanliness of the fuel system, but it still don't hurt.

I've used Seafoam directly into the manifold to de-carbon old motors that suffered from not having "the gunk blown out" as ol' Bill Cosby would say, but never tried it in the gas tank. Frankly, I think that'd do more to reduce the local mosquito population than carbon in the combustion chambers.

A cheap and a proven method a friend experimented with was going to the dollar store and buying a bottle of fingernail polish remover which is just acetone. You have to read the back of the bottle to make sure it's just plain o' nail polish remover. He put one bottle in at each fillup. After a few tanks and then doing the math, he gained 2 mpg and has a clean engine. Worked better than anything else I've seen on the auto parts shelves that go for about $3 a bottle. Give it shot. I've used that Seafoam stuff that you pour down the carb and it seemed to do what it was suppose to do. With all that white smoke it better have cleaned something. I have heard really good things about Amsoil's intake and carb cleaner but I haven't had the chance to find out myself.

I have seen several Catalytic Converters plugged up with crud from using octane boosters.

There was a time when some people got rich buy providing a better product at a lower price.
Now they get rich by ripping us off and paying off the politicians. Can you spell DEREGULATION

Injector cleaners work best if you use them when you buy/install the motor brand new. Running a motor 50,000 miles before you start using the stuff is fairly worthless. A couple bottles of cleaner is not gonna remove tank full's of crappy gas. Seafoam does work but it really doesn't clean the carb it's cleaning out the combustion chambers and valves, but it is probably one of the better one's out there. I'd like to try the Amsoil stuff and I hear Royal Purple and BG have good stuff also.
