I love this truck, I had it a whole week before my first problem. We had a little snow this weekend ,so I decided it was time to test the 4wd. Before I bought the truck the 4wd worked fine, but as you may have guessed today nothing. Now, I am not a mechanic .( I was planning on learning on this one :D ) I locked in the hubs,I put it in 4HI the light came on but only the rear wheels would turn. I put it in 4LO the same thing only the gears were lower. I looked under the truck while my brother tried to get it to move . The front driveline would not turn unless the truck was rolling . I checked to make sure that when I moved the shifter it was moving at the transfer case but that is all I know to do ,cuase I'm not much of a mechanic. Any help would be appreciated. Thank You

Jack up all four tires and then see what happens. As its a new truck you have to start with the basics and see where to go from there. Could be a hub. What kind of trans case and tranny?

See, there is where I have to show my ignorance. redface.gif The only thing I know for sure is that it is four speed manual transmission and a 360 engine . Is there a way to identify the rest of the drive train or do you just have to know? :confused: This is my first jeep and the only thing I know about them is what I read here. smile.gif

You should have the NP208 chain-driven part-time transfer-case with a T-176 transmission.

It drives the front axle through a chain that is engaged directly to the output shaft of the transmission when the lever is moved to 4wd, so the only reason it WOULDN'T do so is if something is broke or missing. Top culprits would be:

* Transfer-case drive chain
* Front driveshaft
* Pinion gears in differential
* Drive gears in front hubs

Good luck!

Try this, unlock the hubs then put in either 4 low or 4high. Then look under it while your buddy idles it in gear. Is the front driveshaft turning? If so the transfer case is working, and the problem is in the differental or hubs. If the shaft doesn't turn then it's a transfer case problem. This will help narrow your problem down.

Thank you for the information . It took me some time to get a chance to look at it , but I did see a round plate on the side of the T-case that said 208 AM then it had a date of 81. There was some other writing that I could not read. I put it in 4 HI with the hubs unlocked and had my brother drive it a little , the front drive shaft did not turn. So, I got underneath and I could turn the drive shaft with my hand . I also noticed that the hub on the driverside was turning but the one on the other side would only make a half turn . Can you tell me where to go from here ? I am an electrican and I don't have a lot of expereince with working on trucks , but I am tring to learn . I think with someone to point me in the right direction I can do it.
Thanks again.

sounds like the trans case, but i would still jack it up all the way around so it is nice and safe and then see what youve got. the front shaft should spin in 4hi. Try 4 hi and 4 lo. Check the fluid level while youre there.
