I hope someone can help. when driving my 79 wagoneer I smell gas. I checked it over really well and don't see any leaks. The only time I smell it is when I drive it not when it just sits. If I leave the windows rolled up I don't smell it until I crack the window open. I've left the motor running and checked uner the hood and can't smell gas it is only in the vehicle when i'm driving with the window open. doesn't make a bit of sense to me I sure hope someone can help

I noticed tonight that there are two rubber hoses connecting hard lines from the tank to the hard lines on the frame. It might be worth checking those out.

I had the same problem. Found out the hose that runs from the charcoal canister to the tank was rotten and had came off the tank inlet. If you remove the access plate and look forward (about 3") you'll see where the hose connects with the tank. Worth a look.
I had the same problem with my '79. After replacing every hose I could lay hands on--without result--I replaced the gas cap. It didn't look bad; I just did it because that was the only thing left. That fixed it.

I just did the lines in my car. I could smell gas with the windows open but I saw no wetspot on the ground. I had a line that was seepin gas.

You might also want to check your choke. Or you may have blown a power valve. You might be running really rich now.

I'd agree with the runnin rich idea. I'm runnin super rich right now and my entire city block smells like gas when I warm up the jeep in the morning.

Has anybody ever had this trouble with a '75 cherokee or wagoneer? When I would fill up, I get a strong gas smell inside, not outside. Rolling up the windows only made it worse. And if I was climbing altitude, it would get so bad, I would have to stick my head out the window to stay alive. I found the check valve in the rear quarter panel had a large o-ring that didn't seat right. I bypassed the valve using a tee and the fumes are gone. Is this a common problen and is there a better solution? My dad had a '75 wag years ago with the exact same problem.
