for a while now i have noticed and performance a little down. my exhaust had a rich smell to it, not a real heavy gas smell though. i recently did the TFI upgrade on my 1991 GW. when i pulled the plugs they had a lot of carbon deposits on them.
it ran good after the upgrade but then last week it was idling with a little shake. i pulled all the new plugs to check them out. most of them had large amounts of the carbon on them. i cleaned them off and it is runnning well. my egr needs to be changed and i will do that tomorrow, but i don't think this is my answer. i think i just need to lean out the carb. when i changed the ignition i did the timing and set the idle correctly.
am i misdiagnosing or do i have it? thanks for any help

A bad EGR valve can have lots to do with it. I have never seen one myself go bad but if it was bad and wasn't allowing air into the mix then yes it could cause a rich condition. Remember that the carb is calibrated to run with the EGR in working order.

Where is the hose coming off the egr supposed to hook up at. I am slowly replacing and reconnecting all the plugs lines from the PO. The vacume diagram is not always that clear.

Check the powervalve in your carb it may be leaking. Holley PVs work fine in Motorcrap carbs just make sure you get one thats a two stage one or it will run too lean.
If that ain't it have you catolitic converter checked. It may be clogged.

i will give the powervalve a look. the cat is not clogged because i hacked mine off. now i straight pipe it to the muffler.
lostwolf i will look at the egr and where it hooks up when i get off work tomorrow. i am on my way there now. i ordered my new egr from the dealer today, i will not even print how much i paid. hopefully when change it out i will have a clearer picture of my too rich problem

Those of you in need of new smog equipment or even EGR valves. I found a place on the web called Economy Smog Parts. I bought some of my missing parts from them that the Dealer doesn't even sell any more. They offered a factory original EGR for $55 but you can negotiate most of their prices down. I think I had him down to $37 with the purchase of several other parts, but I chose to go with a part store replacement with lifetime warranty for $22.
Their number is (800)232-7670
Good luck,
Patrick
