hahahha no can't do that. I think he saved me some damage more than once

Worst I did was slam the whales rear about 10x on various ledges. under bumper recievers make great armor. Got hung up twice on my front ubolts, which was annoying until someone pointed out the joys of turning the Emergency Drive on :o

Hey Ryan, I was wondering why your wheels were turned like that because the view I had from behind you looked like your ascent was pretty clean. You musta got straight just before hitting the bottom.

For everyone else - Pictures just do that obstacle no justice at all. From behind the wheel, it looks like a 12 foot drop.

Definately an ominous obstacle. What you can't really tell from the pictures is that to the right (left in the picture) was about a 300ft deep canyon and right behind the photographer was the continuation of the canyon. So after you dropped off the wall, there was a fairly sharp left turn to get to the next section. Definately a lot of fun.

I'm posting my scenery and rock shots on my personal flickr page, but just jeepin shots for the Moab group. I have a few different blogs and my friends there dig that stuff, as well as I do. I got a cool shot of you two up on that cliff where we all walked out at the overlook, I'll throw it up on there for ya.

I'm still in minor shock, I was following your lines in my open diff rig, and had no idea you were in E-drive. Or spooled :P I did both days just in reg drive, low range, except for using edrive to get off that ledge and that rock at the end when my ubolts got hung up (looks for grinder)

That is the rig that kinda looks like a sniper from the front but then the wheelbase matches the trackwidth and it just looks funny.

The past several years we have tried to get a good FSJ showing going at Moab around EJS. I think we finally pulled it off this year. It was like a real Invasion!

Michel and Ken have nearly stock Wags and they went just about everywhere the built rigs went. I was duly impressed! Not to mention we had a Buick 350, 2 buggies and 3 401s in the crowd. The whole thing was quite a sight to see for sure. :D

Woah! Was that from Ouray '02? That looks like my MJ heading down the trail! (it's sitting at my cabin with the motor out right now. Got a 67K replacement drivetrain to go in)

(never mind! Looks like my '73 J4000)

Pix looked fine to me, Jason. There was one with a lot of lens flare, but you were shooting right into the sun, so that's to be expected. A few where the lens didn't focus, but what do you want from a camera that is, let's face it, a LEGACY DEVICE.

You don't need a new battery, you need a new camera. For $249, you can get better quality images in a smaller, easier to carry package AND with longer movies, because I know how much you love taking movies with your still camera. Call me and we can go shopping sometime. :D

What is that blue thing in the back ground doing? Is he backing up or bouncing forward.

Patiently waiting for video production....

Jason needs constant ego-massaging, so here's another of Brutus.

Thanks.

Took me a minute - the brake hose is dangling and fluid is all over the place, and of course the spring is missing. Wow, what happened?

We were doing Poison Spider and were returning on that big flat rock area with cracks/crevices that you have to traverse. He hit his front spring shackle twice, the second time the spring broke right in front of the rear eye. So off to Moab we went in my Jeep to scrounge up another one. Found a late '70's wag in Joe's Auto's yard, he was closed but answered his phone, said we could have it for $45, so we removed it and bought a new brake line at CarQuest, got back up there at sunset, fixed it and were back at Moab Brewery by 11. The other guys didn't get back until 3, so I guess we were the lucky ones, unbeknownst to us at the time.

Thanks Kennyh for posting... the adventure on poison spyder

finally home..... did not get web access.... (it was dial up before.... so .... i did not try too hard)

Should I add... to the carnage....Kenny's tailgate as well.....:( and my rear bumper and fender..... i fixed the fender w a BFH..... and found a spare bumper on my spare wagoneer....

the HEI is good for low rpm... but not there yet for the top speed... need to work on the timing....

the spare alternator that i was going to give to Dustin, is not charging too well (12.7 volts)... put the back up this morning before the final ride home.... well i did some trails in the sierras....

I got a cool shot of you two up on that cliff where we all walked out at the overlook, I'll throw it up on there for ya.

I would love to see this and any other pictures and videos anyone else caught of us or our rig...er.. I mean Dustin's rig  He is especially interested in his mud puddle video and the ones that show how much it can flex.

I didnt catch some of the best parts on camera because I wanted to ride on the fun ones, and then my camera had a problem. Since this was our first Moab trip, our first run in the Jeep and our first real trip outside of the valley by ourselves I want as many pictures as I can get.

We would like to be able to show Dustin's dad why we still say it was worth the trip when he had to tow us home. He still cringes when we say we want to go again.

I looked at Krista's stills for the big run and got to thinkin... uh-oh ;) They end at Golden Crack as the sun was setting by that point.

They are ALL worthy of web posting. If any of you are concerned about taking your stock or almost stock FSJ to Moab AND also run some trails, maybe some of these will encourage you to believe even you can do Moab trails.

I present you Poison Spider, Gold Spike and Gold Bar Rim (http://jubileejeeps.org/fsjrides/07moab/thebigrun/). The two near stock rigs owned by Michel and Kenny ran only Poison Spider and did durn fine with it.

If you're thinking propane and replacement engine go HIGHER COMPRESSION. It's one of the reasons I didn't go propane on my swap. Mostly I already had most everything for EFI though. If propane stays cheap enough while gas skyrockets I might still convert to propane.

I was wondering about the Rhino grill too. I suppose they are worth money now so no sense ruining it.

Did you go over the Golden Crack Jason? I only saw one of two make it on the videos.

fulsizjeep
05-08-2007, 06:18 AM
Jason rolled through the crack first so he could get on down the trail before his battery went dead again. Krista got Scott and Dustin on digital after I went through. It was sunset by that time and our camera got put away for the rest of the night after this obstacle.

Unfortunately no video of Brutus on the crack. At that point on the trail... everyone was bracing for a long night. Brutus didn't have any problem with the crack.

EDIT: Actually Flint went first through the crack so that if I stalled in the crack or couldn't make it he could help me from the other side. Once I went through I went around Flint. :D

I knew about the higher compression required for propane... I am just not sure how high. My roomate seems to think 13 or 13.5:1. I think before I do anything with it I will call the gotpropane.com guys and ask them what the ideal compression ratio is.

Desert Beast
05-08-2007, 08:32 AM
higher compression is not required w/ pane. its just that w/ its higher "octane" rating lets you build a motor w/ higher compression w/o detonation.
itll run fine on a stock motor, your just not using it to its full potential.

Also there is less energy in propane so the easy fix is to bump up compression to equal the power you would have had with gas or even surpass it.

I can't remember the percent power loss but, I know propane is one of the better alternative fuels to gas or diesel as far as power loss.

Yeah I should have tried to go along even though my truck wasn't ready. I could have rode in the back of Brutus. Judging from the sleeping bag I'd have only suffered broken bones and a concussion.

I'm curious how much damage happened to the stock red wag that crossed the crack. I heard scraping, I'm just wondering how much it messes up the rig or if it just sounded worse than it looked.?

Now that is funny.

Stock red wag? I think you are referring to Scott's wag which is hardly stock, IIRC 33" LTB's, 4" lift, rear spool and a tight-chained quadratrac with functional e-drive. If you watch the video again, it looks like the only "damage" is that it bent the rear bumper up. It doesn't look like it got tangled into the rear quarter very much if at all.

That was my waggy crossing the crack. The sound you hear is the bolt for the hitch ball scraping the rock. I kept meaning to take the ball off while I was there but I forgot. Wasnt too much of a problem, I cleared most everything. The bumper wasn't damaged either, I was missing one of the two bolts that holds that piece of bumper on and it just pivoted on the other bolt and rotated up.

fulsizjeep
05-09-2007, 10:58 AM
I didn't realize that bumper was tweaked until I went through all the videos a couple times. Maybe all 3 pc. bumper FSJs that run Moab should have only one bolt on each end. ;) The only sound I heard was barking dawgs and a 401 pulling that red beast through. We also found that mud flaps don't need to be on the trails in Moab. :D

For the record it was my fault we got stranded in that puddle, I was the one that said to stomp on it  and it would have been even more awesome if everything stayed dry under the hood and we drove out on our own.
