In TSC last night and eyed the DIY Herculiner kits so today I decided to tackle removing the carpets, that and the weather's nice for a change...The driver's side floorpan had a good bit of flaky surface stuff but not as much as the passenger side, I was a bit shocked to find 2 little holes in the PS floorpan.

PS, the 2 holes are by the tip of the knife and the rest of the floor is rock solid...Is this saveable?

How should I prep all the crusty stuff for Herculining?
On a side note I finally got the tach in as well as the CB, and no, not that messy every day

Still have to get the snorkel mounted, hooked up and waterproof everything under the hood then swap QT chains and it'll be ready for some wheelin!

Wire brush both sides of the floor and coat with por15 or some marine rust proofing paint, then add the liner. You could prolly get away with just leaving the two holes, might be wiser to have someone tack some welds in them to be safe. How come you put the tack up by the mirror? I guess you could still keep your eyes on the road while looking at it, but it feels to far from the rest of the guages to me.

I had it on the colum then realized that the whole thing turns when ya shift. I also tried below the dash on the AC screws but I couldn't angle it up enough to read it. I want to do some sort of center console and when I do it'll get moved down there, if it were a stick I'd probably have it closer but I really just wanna see what RPM's the motor's at at different speeds, ya kno?

Yea that makes sense. When I was putting a tach in I forgot about the outside of the column rotating, so I had it fastened to the column and sat back and looked at it, then realized my mistake. I made a bracket that attaches under the trim around the column, so the tach is bolted through the trim into the bracket. Not the neatest and cleanest looking job, but it works well enough and stays put, which is good enough for me as I plan on getting a Z&M dash sometime in the future anyway.

Any pix of your setup?

Not handy but I can go take one. I busted the trim piece tho and the tach's bracket is above the trim, so I was going to try redoing it with the tach's bracket concealed under the trim.

Gotcha

This is it now. I'm gonna find a new trim piece and prolly make a new bracket from 1/8" aluminum since that 1/8" steel is rather hard to bend in small sections by hand, and it's just not the same as hand bending when trying to use tools. I'm not sure what I'll do with the tach's bracket but I might make one from more aluminum so I can bend whichever way I want. I think I'll have the support bracker under the trim like this one, and the tach's bracket will come out from under the trim too so it looks neater and less haphazard.

Looks good, I contemplated on that too but musta been too tired to think of makin a bracket like you did.
BTW-Is that the original speedo? I've never seen a GW, or a wag LTD with the 85MPH speedo, just Chero's and J Trucks.

Thanks, it ought to look nice and neat when I get around to redoing it. I'll prolly take some pics detailing it too in case anyone else wants to try.
As for the speedometer, I think it's the original, I never replaced it anyway. Why they ever went to using 85mph speedos when they had the 120 ones is beyond me, although I don't think many people would try to drive faster than 90 in an FSJ. It's just cooler to have a speedo that suggests you can go that fast

Ive got my tach. on the driver side "A" piller...
As for the floors...BayBilly used a product called Rust-Bullet and looked like it worked pretty good.

I like the tach up top, these little sunpros are handy, but kinda small. The tach I have is a 5" face, but it's mounted down on the tranny hump which requires a few seconds more than whats safe or useful to 'find' and track back up to the road.

You are still using the Dell Lanyard... me likie!
Never knew that rust was there, I'd just wire brush and POR-15 it, then use whatever you want under it. I plan on doing the POR-15 and then durabak w/o the texture in the XJ.
This winter was hard on the little chero too, had a couple spots of flake show up underneath, where there wasn't any before... it'll be time to scrape and coat this summer.
