View Full Version : 77 in a 83
How feasable would it be to swap out a drive train from a 77 into a 83, engine, trany, xfr case, axles? 2 door to 4 door so drive shaft maybe, and swap from a manual to auto, or would a t176 4 speed and NP205 hold up / bolt up to a 401?:fsj:

Transfer case from the 77 would have the wrong front axle drop- passenger side- while the 83 has a driver drop axle.
your right J4GRAND, but how hard would it be to swap the axles from the 77 also, everything would line up right?, maybe the tranny cross member might need to be moved front or back

I'm swapping '79 stuff into an '88. I haven't dealt with the transmission/t-case stuff yet, but if I remember correctly you'll need the tranny cross-member. Also, you might have to re-route the exhaust. I know I have to, but I have an aftermarket exhaust system. You know this, but you'll need the driveshafts...and all the other bells and whistles.

I think you need to use the back holes for the t-case crossmember and if you have a Y-pipe, you'll need to use one for a 70's era. Axles should work fine, I have a 1977 frame on my 1990 GW with its 90 drivetrain.

It will all bolt in so long as both rigs came with the same engine (i6 to V8 has different mounts). The cross member is the same, it just moves to the other set ofholes if anything. You will need the trans mount that goes between the trans and cross member. The axles will also bolt right in.
i'm just finishing putting a 82 running gear into a 79 chief and no one mentioned the floor pan is different as well!!!i put 2" poly block body lift in to fit auto/t-case swapped f&rear diffs and removed the fuel tank(going straight lpg)but would have needeed to swap this as well..cheers..dc..
