Hey y'all... My name is Ben and I seem to have gone and done something foolish again. I think I'll be leaning on all of you a lot in the coming months, so please bear with my idiot questions for now. I am not new to automotive restoration ('70 BMW 2002, '78 Alfa Spider, '70 VW Karmann Ghia, '87 Audi 4kcsq, '87 BMW 535iS, etc) but this will be my first American vehicle. Finally a chance to use the SAE section of my tool chest!
Anyway, I am the new owner of a 1972 J2000 1/2 ton with a 360, Holly carb, glasspacks, and a nice bit of rust. It needs some interior work, some paint, and some wiring stuff, but I am very happy with the purchase. It is incredibly fun to see the look on peoples' faces when I get out of this beast in a suit and tie and go to work. Here are a few pix to get y'all started... oh, and the lumber rack will be for sale shortly if anybody in the silicon valley is interested.

dude... they're not even nerf bars - they're bulk exhaust tubing welded to the frame. they go soon...

Nice! I second the loss of the nerf bars, they're goofy on a pickup. otherwise looks like an excellent starting point for a restore, I think it would look pretty nice in that orange color with original three piece bumpers on it, canvas cover over the bed using those tie downs would be neat too. Driving that to work in a suit and tie is the kind of thing I'd do.

more pix are uploading to my site (http://www.kuhgott.com/temp/jeep) as i type this. no engine shots yet, I'll try to get some tomorrow. It's pretty clean in there compared to every other 70's truck I've looked at. I have to pull out a lot of spaghetti and make the wiring work right - at the moment, the aux gas gauge reads backwards and the original one don't read at all. I also need to invest in such luxuries as door locks and a new ignition to replace the ghetto-rig starter button... any bets on what's in the tape deck? I'm gonna say John Tesh's "Sax by the Fire" :D

Very cool truck, that orange looks really good on it as do the bumpers. Pretty silly how they used exhaust tube to make nerf bars but hey, atleast it shouldnt be too hard to remove em. Welcome aboard!

Actually lived with it for the first time today - forgot just how fun it was to start a carb'd car early in the morning. Also forgot about such fun things as slow wipers, no defrost, and no window washers. Still, I love it and I'll probably drive it to work at least a few times a week.
A little bit more about the truck - it has a Holly 4bbl carb, polished valve covers, some "custom" wiring, the aforementioned glasspacks, something custom in the suspension (of questionable quality), the lovely side steps made of exhaust tubing, a fuel filler also made of exhaust tubing (!!)... lots of custom touches throughout, actually. The rust is also less severe than I initially thought. I'm taking it to my body guy tomorrow to get some professional opinion going on... I am very happy with it, just need to get the tailgate done and decide if I want to spray bedliner or keep it stock. It's such a great "survivor truck" that I am hesitant to do too much to it. I took a few more pix today, all can be found at http://www.kuhgott.com/temp/jeep2 but here are a few highlights:

Welcome to the Madness! I like that pumpkin color. My Grandma and Grandad had a 72 Hornet that color when I was a younger man. That rear spring stack looks like it has at least 2 add-a-leafs in there. Would need to see the whole stack to the shackle to give a better guess.

Dose anyone have any info on the rear bumper of this truck (factory opt, aftermarket, custom)? I have seen at least one other J with what seems like the same bumper. It looks like it provides clearance to drop the tailgate completely down, perhaps for loading.

wow VERY nice looking truck (i think you just convinved me to FINALLY put the *mint* razor grille ive been stashing on my grand wag )
that truck is a reminder of how GREAT looking the vehicles were that Jeep made in those days

you can in fact drop the tailgate - totally cool for loading bikes (only thing I've had in there so far)...
and a - I was wondering how many e28ers were around...
every time I drive the truck I love it more - I just talked to my body guy and what we're basically gonna do is spray a few of the spots in a matching orange (to keep the patina), line the bed with line-x or the like, and spray rust converter to stop the rust but keep it as a timewarp vehicle otherwise. The interior will be completely refurbished with the addition of a period (semi)correct Becker Mexico radio, with a built-in iPod mount in the glovebox. It should make a perfect weekend/wheeling/dump truck.

i know - work has been killing me and the board was a bit too immature, so I had been taking a break from it. but I still lurk there from time to time.
I actually just redid my subframe bushings and brake bomb and removed the rear seats to install Schroth Rallye 4's. Of course, now the battery is dead from not driving it, but that can be fixed.
