I just bought about a week ago. I am having trouble getting in 4+4. checked front differential , it was bone dry! so it will sit until I can check everything out. hose on front dif. missing where it clamps on to dif. where is it suppose to go? # 3.31 on dif.? has the 229 transfer case, need to pick a socket to check fluid level in it, it sounds like it might be close to dry, just by twisting the drive shaft back and forth. play about 1/4 inch. rear # 3.31 was full, but dirty. if anyone can give me some info on what type of fluid i should use on all of this mess and where the hose goes it would be greatly appreated. then maybe i can save the beast and start working on getting the 4+4 to work. i have alway's wanted one and hope i can work this out. engine runs good. lots of vac hoses missing! thank's for your reply in advance. mike

Welcome to the forum smile.gif
For the difs I use some good 95 weight gear lube, with a pint of STP oil treatment.
For the hose....I believe you are speaking of the breather hose, thise should go up and clamp next tot he radiator or aroun there, so you dont get water in the difs from water crossings.
For 4wd not working....I think the 229 uses vacuum to enguage. But I have no way to verify this as I dont have one ;p Others do annd will post though.

Difs are 90 weight, Np229 was tranny fluid I think. (the cap off the 90W will fit the tranny container easing filling.) The front dif hose comes up to the drivers side of the radiator and originally had a vent cap to keep water out. Mine was about even with top of radiator mounting flange.

np229 is vac activated. switch under dash to right of steering wheel. 4x4 light on dash should come on. My 87 does not go into 4x4 right away. takes a bit of time, couple of seconds.

3.31 should be your axle gears.

Thanks everyone for your reply. I ended up putting in 3 pints in the front dif. Put on a breather hose. The transfer case took 5 1/2 pints of transmission fluid. I did not get to take it out because I finished it this evening after work. But it felt like it moved a little easier in forward and reverse. duh! Anyway's i can't beleive someone would let it get that bad. I will take it to work and see how well it works. Also I will let you all know tomarrow what happens with the 4+4 mode. Thanks again, Mike
