I got some nice wheels off of a j-truck at the junkyard and was wondering how to break the bead and get the tire off?
I took a sawzall to one, but couldnt break the bead and didnt want to mess up the wheel.
Id really hate to have to pay a service station to get these tires off.
Any suggestions???

we used to let the air out and lay it flat by the front bumper of a truck then use a bumper jack and set the base as close to the bead as you can and start jacking. It doesnt take much. once the bead is broke we used a small sledge hammer to pop it the rest of the way around being carefull not to hit the rim, like I said after it pops it goes pretty easy sometimes just standing on it will break it the rest of the way loose.

Lay it on the ground and drive over the sidewall. Literally. This is how we do it down south.

All of these ideas will work, but unless your on the trail it is better to let a service station do it. Besides when you get new tires on the wheels you should balance them. Most stations only charge a few bucks for the dismount/mount, it's the balance that is the pricey thing.

AHHH do it yourself.. What I heard was to jack up the truck and put a 2x4 on its side under the wheel and set the rig down on the wood. Usually it breaks the bead. Good Luck...

Oh yeah when you go to put the new wheels on go to my sig and mount them yourself...

yeah SLOwag it was your website that got me wondering how to "un"-mount a tire. LOL
I dont mind having tires mounted and balanced but I REALLY dont want to pay to have junk tires taken off.
Im not putting new tires on for a few weeks because I gotta sandblast and re-finish the wheels.
Thanks for all of the ideas smile.gif

I usually use my High Lift and a pickup to break the bead (slide wheel under truck bumper, jack up close to bead, but not on rim obviously, then once bead is broken, repeat around the rim if needed, other wise beat the rest off, then use prybars and large screwdrivers and a tire iron, whatever i find laying around, to pop it off.
