I found Cresy's thread here (http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=009890) and it was very helpful.

There is no hitch on my 82 Wagoneer, so I wouldn't have to deal with removing an old rusty one. I would only have to deal with drilling into a scaley frame.

Are there any major bumper or other issues with installing a hitch? What brand hitch do you recommend and what supplier? I figure I'll have to spend somewhere about $100-150 on the hitch.

Thanks

What type of hitch are you looking for? I have a reese style reciever hitch, in good condition. I do not believe any holes need to be drilled I think it uses existing holes.

Here is the hitch I got for my 82 Cherokee:

It was almost bolt on. There was one hole that was just a little bit off. I just enlarged the hole. You will also have to modify the spare tire mount down there if you use that. Don't get the "Plug in" harness they sell. It did not work on my 82 even though it says it will.

CJ - Class III or IV. Gonne be towing a YJ Wrangler, possibly on a trailer. When you say you have one in good condition, I assume you mean for sale?

Chris - Thanks for the link!

There are a ton of them to be found at the wrecking yards. I got mine for $35. Bolt right on .

Take that one BW, I got my class III from JCWhitney, I think it was 99 + shipping and I had to drill (but it was real easy to drill, definately a half banana job)

My class III is completely rusted out. I have never seen one rust thru the walls of the hitch on both sides. Seems weird because the frame is virtually rust free.
I'll be looking for one soon.

My factory hitch on my '88 did the same. So I too am looking for a RUST-FREE replacement.

I picked up a Reese class IV on ebay for $100 shipped. The guy had more and they were listed to fit a cherokee in the same vintage. No mention of Wagoneers, but it did bolt right up.
