View Full Version : Dana 44 Q's??
I have this 76 Cherokee that I have been working on and it has the 44's front and rear. Now they are 3.54 ratio, and it has the 3 spd tranny (T15 I think). I am going to be taking this rig offroad with somewhere in the neighborhood of 35" tires so I need some lower gears. Question is this: do I have to get a different carrier to install 4.56's or lower? Also if I do, what carrier will work? I am sure there are some other vehicles that have the same spline count etc. Thanks for the help in advance.

the carrier break is at 3.92. so for 4.56s, yes, you would need different carriers.
i'm not very familiar with thick gears. but, those may work so you don't have to buy new or used carriers. but, not sure.

I'm running thick (Rubicon) 4.10s with my OEM 2.73 carrier in a '90 Grand Wagoneer front Dana 44...for whatever that's worth.

Then, the thick gears should work for him.
Thanks guys, I will research the thick gear option. Can't wait to get this thing up and going and out on the trail.

I'd go ahead and drop in a decent locker while you have it open. Come on,you know you'll be cracking the pumpkin open again later on.........
Detroit TruTrac
not as high as a Detroit $$$ and almost as good if you're on a budget:thumbsup:

Took the words right out of my mouth... It shure would be a waste of $$ to have to reset those gears twice...

last time i searched no one made thick 4.56s,only 4.10s.
since 35s are right on the line of what a 44 will handle, heres what iwould do:
leave the 3.54s in there, unless you find an absolutely screaming deal on some used thick gears or gears and carriers. keep the $$ you spend on 44s to a minimum,as you may find that they do not hold up to 35s and your driving style. there are alot of folks here that can tell you how much it sucks to spend a chunk of change no new detroits, new gears, etc.,only to decide they want bigger axles later when the 44s dont cut it.
take the $$ that you are willing to spend on gears, and spend it on a granny 4 speed. if youre working on a pre 80 rig find a jeep t18/d20 for an easy swap.
i wheeled with a 258 and 3.54s for a long time, with a t18 and 38s. in granny gear/low range youll have plenty of gear, even with crappy axle gears.
if youre t15 had a 4:1 first gear(which i dont think it does,i think its around 3:1) you would need to put 5.60 gears into your axles to achieve the same ratio as a t18 with a 6.32 first
a tranny swap will get you more crawlability for your $$ than a gear swap will, and will still work with bigger axles if you decide to swap them in later ;) .
my 2 cents, for what theyre worth... :drivin:
