I got a 360 open air cleaner(14"x2.5" K+N).I have seen pictures of engines that have the open filter placed inside the stock air cleaner base.So you got the O.E. base, new air cleaner, and a new shiny air cleaner top, so that there is a gap all around. Couldn't find a pic to post. Has anyone seen this or recommend doing this. Is it done so you can hook up pcv, oil filler hose , etc. I was just going to use the new cleaner assembly. But what do I do with the tube coming off the oil filler? Changing the intake to Edel 2131 and Carb to Edel 1406.

I was just fixing to ask that about my 88 wag. I'm not too worried bout the oil breather as much as the vacuum lines hooked up on the back of the cleaner assembly. Does it affect idle or anything else? if so then what and what did you do about it? I got this new wag and want to open it up with open filter but wasnt sure about about the vacuum lines or the valves in the side of the cleaner assembly.

alot of the crap hooked to the air cleaner housing is there mainly for emisions (warm air valve, air inlet trap door, crankcase breather). The one I would worry about that may affect your carb settings is your warm air valve. From Haynes "this allows for a leaner fuel/air mixture settings for the carb, wich reduces emmissions and improves driveability". Plug off the lines and re adjusting fuel and air valves, and re-check timing should do it.

The hose from the oil fill cap is part of the crank case ventilation. Removing it will cause moisture to build up in the crank case. As far as using an after market air breather they are just so you can say you have one in your sig file. They don't improve performance a bit, unless your racing.

People use the OE air cleaner base/open top usually to reduce the turbulance from incoming air when driving and to increase the vortex effect. So they say.
I have removed all the vacuum lines from my stock air cleaner housing, fabricated on another stock snorkle, that I removed the internal trap doors from in both, and piped-in fresh air to the other snorkle exactly like the other side.
The result is that it looks like a "stock" dual-snorkle housing.
Using the K&N filter with this setup makes me feel that the motor is getting the max COLD-AIR it can use without restriction.
The vacuum lines can be by-passed without problem.
