I was thinking about putting a new radio in my 82 cherokee, but i cant figure out how to get the old one out. I tried taking the glovebox out first but that didnt work. the only other way i can think of is taking the dashboard out and removing the radio from the top, is that possible? and how?

The only way I have removed them is taking out the glovebox. Not much room, but it is possilbe.

I don't remember what kind of radio came in 84 - is it the shaft style or the DIN style? If shaft style, then yes it has to get pushed into the dash and maneuvered down and out through the glovebox. It's not easy, but it will come out. On some there is a bracket attached to the back of the unit - make sure you take that off if it's there. My guess is that's what you have, since the DIN radio in my 89 comes out with two screws.

If you remove the body, it will drop right down between the transmission and the frame rails.

LMAO! Where's a large trout when you need one? Like already said it takes a little pushing and shoving to get it out thru the glovebox but it will go. Thank God for DIN style radios!

Ouch, actually if you poke a volvo radio with your index finder in the correct place, it pretty much falls out.
