View Full Version : wheel tubs
has anyone replaced the wheel tubs in the rear with larger ones?i may have to run my shocks outside of the frame but i would have to retub it.it seems like it would be easy but the rear seat latches onto 2 posts built into the wells.it looks like that may be difficult to reproduce.
your thoughts?

uhhmn, this is mostly supposition on my part. ive patched the fender tubs on a few of my wags, never re-tubbed. i would cut the metal around the seat mount, leaving at least 3-4". then just attach it to the new tub. i just checked out my rearseat posts. to ensure that the posts go onto the new tubs in the right spot, this is what i would do. establish a centerline, a line centered right down the center of the floor. this is a reference point. make sure it is perpendicular to the edges of the existing wells. use a framing square or create a 3,4,5 right triangle( a triangle with multiples of 3,4,5 as its legs and hypotenuse) to do this. put a line across the centerline that establishes the fore and aft position of the posts. also get the height measurement off the floor. all these references establish the location of the posts in 3 dimensions. do your re-tub, when you re mount the posts, just make sure the posts maintain the these dimensions. you are hemmed in by the seat, there is no way to move the catches on the seat inboard. hope this points you the right way

Mark,
I wanted to run 42's on mine and did a lot of research on replacing the rear tubs with bigger ones. With all the fab work I was having done, I could have put larger tubs in but I would not have had fully functioning rear windows and the door lock mechanisms would have become an issue. Also would have lmited rear seat and seat belt options.
You would not have most of these problems in a Cherokee, but you are looking at a lot of work.
thanks for the input guys .i really just have to cut it back even with the frame.right now it sticks out beyond the frame around 2 inches.i may just cut the ones out of my current rig and splice them onto the new rigs.
hey andy
arent hypotenuse's on the endangered species list?lol
we built the shocks for this guy 'sibling rivalry'
these are the same shocks im using for my project.sure would be cool to do a dually set up like this but ive got enough trouble with the cops in my rig as it is.besides i would have to hit the lottery before i could afford that many tires!!!!!!!!!!11
