Is there a way to test whether a quadratrac unit is any good out of the vehicle?I bought a '73 parts rig with a bad engine and broken transmission and was wonderin'if the quad box was worth keepin around.

IIRC there is a little plug you can remove. Then you insert a screwdriver and you can check the chain for slack. I believe 1/2 inch was the maximum allowable. To check the cones, you can disconnect both driveshafts and measure the torque necessary to spin the LSD in the case.

I was just trying to find out if it was worth keeping. The local tranny shop says the parts to repair them are not available(cones?).He says all they do is convert them to part time.I just hate to throw away something that might be useful to somebody else.Oh ya,there was a low range cable in the dash. Was that a common setup?

Low range is common. The unit you have in there is the BW 1339. There may still be a tab on the T-case that will tell you that. The other is the BW 1305. I have a couple laying around that I keep on hand in case I ever need them as spares.

Thanks for the info.I never paid much attention to the quads. The doner wag had a 304 with a TH4oo.I pulled the tailshaft from the tranny just in case I might want to use it.Have a spare D-20 but it never hurts to have other options available.

A Cable in Dash? I thought the low range lever was always on the floor. Now there was some years with a cable actuated E-drive. Is the in dash stuff a cable leading to the main body of the unit, or a vacuum switch with vac lines to the qtrac? If you are looking to help out fellow Jeepers, I might take the cable actuated edrive setup.

Thanks,

Daniel

Earlier QT rigs had a cable actuated low range IIRC.

There was a vacuam switch in the glove box and a cable in the dash.Did you need the cable or the linkage on the transfer case?
