I hate timing this thing. How come when you set your timing to where you like the way it runs sweet, it wont turn over and when you set it to where it turns over nice it doesnt run properly. Have any of you guys experienced this? If so, what is the cure??? TFI Upgrade installed.
How many miles on the motor? If you're having trouble getting it timed or keeping it time the timing chain is prolly shot.

Brand new motor. Brand new everything under the hood for that matter.

I just rebuilt the motor in my '84. I set the timing at 10 deg. It ran like crap (for a lesser term). I put it back to TDC. Ran it for about 500 miles. It started to run bad again, so I set it to 10 deg. again, and I haven't had any trouble. I would also check to see if your vacuum advance is set up right and properly working. If you still have problems, get your timing light, disconnect the vacuum advance, and plug it. have someone advance the throttle and see if there is a major change of timing. If there is, you might have a stretched chain.

Another thing to look at is your vac advance. Apply suction to it and see if it moves freely. I'm not sure year to year, but some at least used a mech advance also, check the movement is not rusted/clogged, some of the advance is adjustable also, as far as how fast or slow it pushes it up. It is not at all uncommon for a vac/mech advance to need replaced or cleaned. Hopefully someone a little more knowledgable will follow this reply.
