Hey Fellas,
I few days ago, someone was nice enough to scan the suspension torque specs page out of a tech service manual for me. Here's a link to that thread:

My concern is the spec listed for the 1/2 x 20 U-Bolts. It only calls for 55 ft-lbs. That sounds kind of low to me. Does it sound right to you guys?
Thanks.
John
Your '88 should have 9/16-18 U-Bolts.

Some older rigs had 1/2-20.

Tadsal,
That would make sense, but I measured the U-Bolts and they appear to be 1/2" diameter. I'll Check them again. I'd rather have them too tight at 100 ft-lbs than too loose at 55 ft-lbs.
John
If they are 1/2" on that '88 of yours they have been replaced I would guess.
I have taken off a lot of U-Bolts doing the SOA kits and any FSJ with a D44 front had 9/16" U-bolts.
I have heard of 1/2" in the rear up through the end of the post mount rear wags, late '75, after that all I have seen were 9/16" also.

Specs from Haynes, for what they are worth-
1/2 " - 45 to 65 ft. lbs.
9/16 " - 85 to 105 ft. lbs.

My cherokee came with 1/2" rear and 9/16" front. I had to drill out the rear spring plates to get the 9/16's ones in. They are MUCh stronger, as I bent the 1/2" ones.

So with my 78 I can assume without inspection that I have 9/16" F/R by your experience, Tad?
Also, the torque-spec page that was pdf'd - it's applies to 86+ GWs. Are they the same specs for my 78? I think I may have over-torqued my shackles and spring-to-frame mounts during installation and I'm hardly getting any travel out of the springs. Thoughts?

Yes, you just made me go look at the one I torched off the '77 in the pile, 9/16".
As far as the shackle torque I've never looked at the numbers, secure and tight but not binding. Loosen them up, bounce it up and down, see if that helps, if it does, snug them down.
