While failing to muscle a 229 t-case into my 89 SJ tonight in the rain, I noticed that as I loosened the crossmember and dropped the engine/tranny down just a hair that I had transmission fluid coming out of the back of the housing. It doesn't leak when it's propped up level, but when dropped down a bit, it drips.

When I took off my exploded 229 a while ago, I had transmission fluid between the t-case and tranny, but I figured that it was because I didn't drain all the fluid out. Could I have lost a seal in the rear of the transmission? Is this hard to fix? Suggestions?

If the fluid is leaking with the driveshaft out of the rear of the tranny, it is normal. Nothing for the seal to seal against.

Whe you put a good t-case back in, check that oil seal at the back of the tranny. Make sure its not bent or broken. They are easy to replace but try not to scratch the surface where the seal goes into or there will a permanent leak.
