I just got my engine rebuilt and literally, on the way home it acted like it was stuck in low. Had it towed to tranny shop and they say rebuild tranny (clutches$900) and replace chain in transfer case.($600). OUCH! Any ideas? I'm in central SC and would appreciate any recomendations. This guy offers a 12/12 warranty. I've now spent more than the purchase price! smile.gif

$600 to replace a QT chain? You don't even need to pull the QT out of the rig.
If you pull the trans/x-case and carry-in the trans it should be $400 max for a rebuild and that's a full rebuild w/warranty. TH400's are real a common trans and kits are cheap.
While a shop(not yours, another one) is doing the trans you can throw in a new x-case chain for about $125.

I had a turbo 400 that acted like it was stuck in low, wouldn't shift and felt like it was "free wheeling" when I let up off the gas. It was a small vacuum line on the side of the trans that split. 25 cents later I replaced the short hose and it worked good as new. I'm not trying to talk you out of a good rebuild (it would go good with the rebuilt engine) but you can get a lot of miles out of a TH400.

lack of vacuum to the modulator (little thing hanging of the side of the th400 with vacuum hose attached) would cause a shifting problem.

so would misaligned linkage. they may have installed the shift linkage incorrectly in the shop, be sure to check that.

hows the fluid, topped off and pink vs brown?

clutch problem will cause slipping, not lack of shift.

check for vacuum at the modulator, if present then try swapping in a new one. i think they are pretty cheap from the auto parts store. they are prone to failure on catalytic converter equiped vehicles. check also for tranny fluid in the vacuum hose at the modulator, and take the modulator off and tip it so the vacuum side is down to see if you get ATF out --- if you find it then the modulator is blown for sure. B&M makes a nice modular with adjustable shift points.
