I know this is going to sound reeeaaal stupid but I am stumped. Can somebody pleeaassee tell me what fluid needs to be in a 1980 J-10 208 t/case.I would say gear oil but everyone that I talked to has conflicting info.Even some of the different manuals are saying ATF or gear oil. Thanks

ATF Dexron III but the early ones in 1980 and maybe even 81 AMC said to use 10w-30 "motor oil" not gear lube but AMC changed the game plan in 81 or 82. There is no difference in the tcases, bearings, gears etc so either works but I personally would use ATF. Just "don't use gear oil".

The metal tag on mine sez 10w-30 just like joe said, I have seen early '80s 208s at the junkyard w/ ATF in them... I was actually thinking about switching to ATF. any thoughts about switching?

I too have the vintage NP-208 TC.
There is a tag on it that states use 10W-30.I once had a mechanic put ATF in it. It seemed to do OK with it. Although when I found out that he put the ATF in it I changed it out to the 10-30wt myself at a later time. Two things the mechanic told me about the ATF at that time probably around 1989.

1. You will get better mileage with the ATF
I believe he figured due to less friction with the thinner atf oil.

2. Most all aluminum transfer cases use ATF.

Well in my case on number (2) he was incorrect.
