View Full Version : flywheel and balancing question
If I replace the flexplate on a blanced 401 with a flywheel (I'm switching from an automatic to a manual transmission), do I have to disassemble and rebalance the whole motor? Where can I get a 401 flywheel?

Paul, there may be a 401 version of this 360 SFI Flywheel available: http://www.performanceamstyle.com/Cart/description.php?II=89&PHPSESSID=a4ffd53cf113f3282e5d350bd1fb6a7b
If there is a stock 401 specific AMC flywheel available then it would be properly balanced for a STOCK 401 with a STOCK balancer. Is your 401 rotating assembly stock?
This is also a good question for the AMC forum:

Is your 401 rebuilt and was it balanced when it was rebuilt? If so and if you still have the balance sheet from the shop it would be possible to balance a 360 flywheel to you engine. Actually, they could probably use your existing flexplate to determine the correct flywheel balance.

The engine was rebuilt and balanced this past March. I'll have to look and see if I have the balance sheet.

If it's a stock balance you can get a flywheel from a 401 car. Motor is the same. Otherwise a 360 flywheel rebalanced may be a better option.
