I recently got a '87 Grand Wagoneer. The cat, smog pump, and other smog accessories are gone (I don't think the EGR is). I did a search and got most of the info I needed, but I still need some help. The parts store guys can't figure out what to order to get the diverter valve. I also want to make sure I have all the right parts.

Here's what I have so far:

3" high-flow cat
Edelbrock headers w/ AIR tubes welded on (to replace the manifolds-the AIR holes are welded shut)
AIR check valves (the ones on top of the AIR rails)
smog pump and belt
I think the pump brackets are still there

The pump I got today didn't have the pulley, though. Also, the instructions w/ the pump show some little valve thingy that's supposed to go directly onto the pump body. I thought it was just a hose that ran from the pump to the diverter valve (?). I know I'll also need the hoses.

What I need to know is what else I need. Part numbers would be great. I just found another term for the diverter valve I'm going to try at the parts store ("bypass valve"-very different from the one on my turbo 2.3L Mustang SVO!). Are there any other vacuum valves or fittings I'll need? Should I try the Jeep dealer parts counter? I wish I knew someone here in town with an intact Wag I could look at, but I don't. :( I'm also going to try calling some local junkyards tomorrow to see if they have and GWs I could look at. If anyone has pics of their smog system they could post or email me ( morpheus4269@yahoo.com ), that would be awesome. I need to get this thing legal by the end of next week! HELP!

You will need the tube that runs from the diverter to the cat; it's a long metal tube that will cost about $150 at the dealer; it has a threaded opening for a check valve at one end.

I don't have a part number but it is Item #10 on a parts page with the title "Catalog 89J Group: 25 Title: AIR Injection System."

Ask a dealer to fax you this page; it has the entire engine compartment smog system laid out.

Your local muffler shop can probably fabricate the tube for much less (some funky bends a little welding).

also check out www.customefis.com (http://www.customefis.com) ("Understanding emissions controls ..." near the bottom of the page) for an explanation of how to reconnect your smog plumbing.

I thought, and had chevelleguy confirm it here (http://www.ifsja.org/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=022382#000000) , that Wags use cats with NO air tube. I thought that the smog pump just vented to atmosphere when the air wasn't needed. Please don't tell me I'll have to exchange the cat I just got!

The cat on my 88 Wag uses an air tube. On the diverter valve there is a long metal line that runs from cat to diverter valve. Small rubber hose connects at diverter, the other two lines go into the top of each manifold air tube.

I hate to tell you, but both my '89 and '87 GWs have the tube. Inceidentally, why don't you post a topic in the general discussion section to find someone near you with an intact system? If there is one near you, it would save a lot of headaches. I probably never would have got my '89 set up right if I hadn't had the other parked right next to it!
Good luck.

Aw, crap. Do you think I can still use the cat I got if I run a tube from the diverter valve to the exhaust pipe right in front of the cat?

Post in general discussion, here I come!

SVO42, Is the emissions decal on the front radiator support still there? It will give you all of the emissions routing info you need. Originally the air tube for the cat was only used on California vehicles. Later, maybe around 1984, it showed up on all 360's. I thought the cat contained different chemicals as well on the air equiped ones. Depending how stringent the Missouri tests are you might get by without it. The customefis site referenced earlier is a great site to help get your systen back in shape. The air pump pulley is hard to find and you pretty much have to find one from another wag.

I have a pulley if you need it. I also should have whatever fittings are attached to the pump itself.

The sticker is still there, but the part where a diagram should be is blank. It is the sticker (which has other emissions info) on the driver's side of the radiator, right?

I called all of the yards around town today, and only one of them had a FSJ, but it was missing the engine. I'm going ot try all of the other ones around tomorrow.

If I can't find one in a JY to look at, I'd like to see some pics, and I will probably be going to the dealer for that parts page you mentioned, Matt, not to mention asking jeepguzzi for parts!
