Are all J-trucks rear axles offset? My '63 with a dana 300 t-case is..seems necessary to clear the gas tank..I thought only quadratrac trucks had this?

All FSJ's rear axles are offset up until 1980, then were centered.

Partly for the D18 transfer case that was used in the very beginning of the FSJ history, and then for the QT's that were used later on. That allowed for the gas tanks to be a little wider, and shorter (less-deep).

In 1980, Jeep started using the NP series of transfer cases, and had to redesign the gas tank to compensate for the driver's drop, and rear center output on those cases.

I don't mean to step on anyones toes, but I believe that there are exceptions to the rule. I have a 72 J-4000 and it uses a D20 transfer case which has a centered rear ouput shaft and a passenger side drop front output shaft. So, I believe that all trucks equiped with D20's have a centered rear diff.

Frozen,
I believe that even the D20 equipped rigs have an offset to the passengers side, just not as much as the QT rigs. Of course I could be wrong... again...

As Lindel pointed out, it's the same pass. offset axle, QT or D20. Yes the D20 has centered rear output, but the output to pinion distance is enough that it works fine

J4Grand,
I was just under the ol truck tonight, playing with the Tcase. You are right, it is a passenger side offset. Can't believe I didn't notice it before. Thanks for the correction.

FYI--- I thought all D44 were offset, either slight or more so with the QT equipped rigs....

This weekend, I went to Desert Freaks house to take a look at his 74 J10....NICE rig.... and... 6 lug CENTERED Dana 44...he also had the D20 T-case.

How many J Trucks out there have the CENTERED D44 axle? anybody know for sure? May certain models of certain years.... I don't know but I found this to be interesting... first one I've seen.

'75 J-10, '67 J-2000, and '64 J-200, all with Dana 20's and a slightly offset Dana 44. I don't know if this fact matters but they are all shortbeds.
