Road trip! Phoenix to L.A. over the weekend to drop the Waggy back at the body shop for them to fix a couple places they messed up. On the AZ side, speeds were 75-80, and on the CA side speeds were 70-75.

I need two things -
1 - Cruise control
2 - SOUNDPROOFING!!!

354 miles on 15.8 gallons.:drivin:

Awesome fuel mileage! Overall, how long did it take you to do the swap? Seriously, your posts are making it harder for me to justify the rebuild I have planned for my 401. I have the funds and the 401 ready to go to the machine shop this week. I think I need to slow down and seriously consider diesel before I put 4k into what at best will be a 13.5 mpg powerplant. Did you by the engine as a pull out or get it with donor rig still attatched? Let me be the first to say congrats for the mileage results!:drivin:

That is so cool to see those numbers coming from an FSJ! I wish I had a diesel FSJ to drive everyday I would sell my DD for one because 22.4 is a lot better than my Chevy 2500HD gas can do (haha). I want one. How much do you have in the swap if you don't mind sharing that info.

Thanks guys. The engine was pulled from a wrecked truck. I got the engine only with the injection pump and injectors. It had 17K miles on it. It was a PITA to source all of the accessories and brackets - if you are going to do it try to find a COMPLETE engine. There were a lot of little things that I had to scrounge wrecking yards, ebay, and the dealership to find.

It was a loooooonnnnnnnggggg term project. Having kids and moving (WA to CA to AZ) and changing jobs has a tendency to push projects back. I bought it about 4 years ago and just worked on it when I got time. Without the distractions it would not take much longer than any other engine swap. That time also included time at the body shop.

Cost...too much. I didn't cut any corners. Lots of upgraded parts, had a lot of stuff ceramic coated, new turbo, Art Carr trans ($ouch$). I was very picky about parts, which is another reason it took so long.

Knowing everything that I know now, I could probably do it complete for a couple thousand (and that would include the engine and trans) and build a super dependable rig.

Ohio - thanks for the link.

Well, like everybody else my curiosity's piqued...so I went and found this page, among others:
http://www.62-65-dieselpage.com/
"The GM light-truck 6.2L and 6.5L diesel engines were optional in the 1982-2000 C/K series pickup trucks, and in the Suburban, Chevy Tahoe & Blazer, GMC Yukon & Jimmy, vans, and motor homes (RV) - in both turbo diesel (TD) and naturally aspirated (NA) versions. In addition, low cost and ready availability have made these engines extremely popular the world over for diesel conversion projects; powering Land Rovers, Land Cruisers, and a host of other foreign and domestic production vehicles."
Woot!

Congrats! I was actually thinking about this today while in the junkyard and looked for a 6.2 or a 6.5. How is the power when compared to the stock gas V-8?

Man I wish I got that kinda mileage!! My first tank after getting my Cherokee I only managed a measly 7mpg...rofl The timing has major problems which I am currently addressing(read: replacing), though. Apparently the PO didn't know what he was doing when he put the engine together. Oh well, more fun wrenching for me!! I hope I can at least get 15mpg after I finish the work.

With all the new boxy SUV out now and the advancement in diesel engines and fuel mileage, do any of you ever wonder if it would be a hot seller adnd still meet CAFE if Jeep dusted off the jigs and dies for the Wagoneer and implemented these options?

Not to highjack the this one, but my 6.2 has great pick up and power in the GW. My J20 has a T-18, and pick up is no problem and towed 5,000 no trouble.

Ohio - thanks for the link.

Too bad we are too far apart. Would like to see that 6.5 TD in person, so I can kick myself in the Great Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley MoogleyGreat Googley Moogley for being a wuss and cheapskate! I didn't want to spend the money on a 6.5 TD, nor have to worry about the turbo location. Ah, the two 6.2's that I have are great and my dad's 6.2 is great for him too.

Here is where I got most of my info about the engines -

http://www.thedieselpageforums.com/tdpforum/

They are a great group over there.

Duracell - I have only been in AZ for a few months, and not on the forums much because I was spending my free time trying to get the Waggy done. I didn't know about the M&G. We are having a M&G for baby Jeep owners (I also have a CJ5) this weekend (off I10 and Ray Rd) - come on down! I did send in a response to the AZ Crew message that was posted a few days ago, so now I should be on the "list".

Now I want to build another. I'd love to do a WT Cherokee with a 6.5 and a NV4500 for race support. But, I have other projects to do first.

What up Sparky, So you came to Cali? Did you visit Eric?
Sounds like you got all the major stuff sorted out. Cool!

Those of you considering a 6.2, Don;t even think about it without a Turbo. :banghead: They define anemic w/o turbo. Been there done that.

6.5 TD however is a whole different story. Killer mileage and reasonable power as DieselSJ can attest to.

You won't find a cleaner install than his either.
Nice Job.:drivin:

Thanks Mark! I think you should drop the idea of installing your LS1 and go with a 6.5.

Yeah, spent the weekend up there. Pulled the engine and trans, freshened the engine with new head gasket and finally installed that Banks header. We got new arms and trak bar and coils from Rubicon and Currie fixed up the 2wd front beam. We replaced everything in the front suspension. Ron spent a few hours welding cracks in the firewall. Got everything back together and had it running by about 4PM on Sunday. It was a busy weekend.

Waggy is sitting at the body shop in Buena Park right now. If everything goes as planned, I'll be picking it up next Friday and driving it to Barstow for the race.

Since my wife busted the control off of my tilt lever with her knee, stripped some wires and shorted my $39 cruise I got at JC Whitney back in '89, I bought an Audiovox cruise control at Autozone for under $100. I also used the manual transmission setting so I wouldn't have to put magnets on the driveshaft. That uses the tach input so it just keeps the engine at a constant RPM. Yeah, it changes speed a little up and down hills because of the torque-converter slop, but I won't be rubbing any magnets off on the rocks.

Oh, you're gonna need a vacuum pump, but I assume you've got one to run the HVAC in the Wag.

No vacuum pump. HVAC is going to be from Vintage Air and it is all electronically controlled. I'm also installing a cable system for the tcase. There are a couple cruise control units that do not need vacuum.
