I keep telling everybody this too! My cherokee has 215k miles on it. Anybody want to guess how many times you have to change the battery pack on one of those things in that many miles? Also, most of these new cars are built with subassemblies - I had to replace the track in my dad's bonneville, motor and trach were fine, but it had to be replaced as a unit. Most things on the jeep can be refurbished in the garage, by any average moron (me). And when it's all over - let the jeep sit 10-20 years, and it will disintegrate on its own....I can't wait to see one of these new hybrid cars after it has sat that long because it was cheaper to buy a new one than to fix.....
and besides - the cherokees a whole lot cooler and safer than those cans are!

I've been saying that too, I think an old car is generally more environmentally friendly than most any new car, because you're not building a car all over again, and you're not producing a ton of plastic either. Cars make most of their pollution when they're made, not when they drive. The Prius is the biggest load of automotive BS ever, it can't outlive the cheapest of old domestic cars, and building them is dumping acid into our atmosphere. They're a total environmental disaster, wow are environmentalists dumb, they're very good at 'researching' material to show how bad everyone else is, not very good at doing any real research to see what effects their actions have.

you all will please pardon me but while the prius is certainly and interesting bit of technology it is a reinvention of the wheel.i once had an 81 toyota that got 44 to 48 mpg with a carburetor.who is kidding who?with simple stupid fuel injection that car would probably get over 50 mpg today.now that car needed an appointment to get on the expressway and i had to down shift to go over speed bumps but it was good on gas.

Now I'm not a chemistry buff so can somebody tell me what the he** "nickel foam" is??? Made in China and probably a big source of their environmental disaster they have going on there I'll bet!!

Remember that that link is COMMENTARY/EDITORIAL. It is someone's OPINION, not fact. That said, I DO believe that batteries (NiMH and others) are a nice source of pollution, however, so is nuclear, coal, and oil.

Pick your poison. No one's going to war over nickel. (Yet.)

We have a long way to go to get to efficient and enviro-friendly transportation.

To get there we need to uphold that goal rather than pursuit of the lucre.

The chief motive of ALL carmakers is to try to soak as much of your money as possible. That every now and then you wind up with a good product is strictly accidental.

Face it; if they weren't achieving their goal they wouldn't still be.

It's a matter of $$$$$--and lots of it to a few.

Yeah, I'm a cynic, but such attitude is constantly protecting me from my own stupidity and gullibility. :p

I've flown to Sudbury, ON several times and have seen the dead zone around the nickel plant. A friend of my boss lives on a lake there and can't eat any of the fish because of toxins from the plant. Until hydrogen power is developed and matured, just keep driving the old dino-burners.

What many of the "greenies" don't realize is when they see an old gas guzzler like our FSJ's chugging along for the last 20 or 40 years, they only see what a waste of fuel and resources and pollution it is. They never consider the fact that buying a new car every few years is much more detrimental to the environment due to scrapping the old car and using resources and energy to manufacture the new ones, every few years, per consumer.

The longer you hold on to your old car, the more you are saving the environment IMO. If I held on to an old REO from the 20's and continued to use it, it would never amount to the overall pollution and resources that a Prius will consumed based on an average trade in time of 3 years. Also, when you plug in your electric car, how is the power generated? Most likely natural gas or coal.

And lay this info onto a "green" Prius owner adn watch their face turn red with anger:mad: .
