I need good off road(not going too deep in the woods)on road(in the city three days out of the week) tires. Any suggestions? 31x10.5 size.

I love the BFG ATs I have on my truck- 33x9.5s. They ride really well and do great in snow and light mud. Have heard they aren't real good in deep mud. I've had this set on for over 15k miles, and they are wearing great.

I have bfg at's...great steet driving and light wheelin'. Do not take them in mud or close...they will not help you. Below are some pis of At's sliding off the trail without notice. I was going forward hugging the trees and then I suddenly went sideways into a rut. If you are not going to play in the mud bfg at's are great.

As long as you don't plan to play in the mud or on the really extreme rocks, any all terrain tire (BFG AT, ProComp AT, Pirelli Scorpion AT) will be a good choice. They aren't very noisy and they have good all around traction.

You have got my vote on the BFG ATs... period!.

Call me a cheap b*stard, but I scored a great deal on a set of new 31" Firestone ATX's a while back (right after the whole Ford Explorer/Firestone deal). I use them on my Samurai, which really doesn't weigh very much (about 2500 loaded me included). They make very little road noise, and really work well on the rocks. The void in the lugs are spaced a little farther apart than the BFG A/T's, so I would think they might work a little bit better in the mud...I dunno. It never rains here where I live, so I really wouldn't know.
I have a set of BFG A/T on my J10 and I like them also. The one good thing about the BFG is the triple guard sidewall. Out here in the desert, sidewall punctures are very common

I vote BFG AT's, also. They ride good, not a lot of road noise, and while they are not an excellent mud tire, they're not worthless. I've been through some pretty decent mud holes with mine, they just pack up a little and won't clear by spinning so easy.

"Billy J" has the right idea, the Firestone ATX is a very overlooked tire right now because of the trouble with one size. I have them on my J-10 and they are great. Cost less than the BFG's and last better. Good Choice!!!!

I also like the BFG's but do to a little better pricing I think I'm leaning towards Bridgestone Dueler A/T's. One benefit of the BFG and Bridgestones are that they make a WIDE variety of sizes for use using 15" rims. For instance the narrow 33's and 32's. I think if I didn't plan on using my truck on some rocks I would have sprung for some cheap off shoot tires but they don't have the construction of the other two mentioned.

Good luck,
P.J.

My wheels were very oxidized and the clear coat was coming off. I paint stripped all the clear coat off, then spent 2 hours each wheel polishing them down. Then I had them professionally clearcoated. Check out the link in my profile.

I'll second the vote for Michelin LTX M/S. On my second set, low noise, high miles and good traction.

Hands down the best tire I have ever owned (for more than average) off road and street use is the Goodyear MTR's. I had these in the 35x12.5 size and they road great and traction was awesome. They did make a little noise on road but they definatley wern't as noisy as a BFG MT. Pricey compared to the BFG MT's but well worth the money. I have a set of Michelin LTX M/S on the Chero now and they ride like a rock off road but I am sure it's because they are 31's. I haven't really been off road with them so I can't tell you what they would do.

Just when I was considering the BFG's ... I have been looking into the 33x9.50's from the suggestions of other users. Last week, I found a set for $115 a piece. They are gone now, and all that is available is an AT KO. I wasn't aware of their price fixing deal until last nite. Any dealer that undersells the suggested retail gets their dealership yanked. I found this at tireracks website.

etires.com still has them, but their price is $145 ea.
