I have a 360 automatic 79 J-10 (159,000). The oil pressure has been low lately and this morning at start up it was nonexistant. It usually starts at 80 and when it warms up goes down to about 40. It doesn't exist today. I shut it down and figured you guys could give me some help before doing serious damage. The dipstick checks full. The oil sensor unit was replaced last year. I do have a leak in the manifold gasket which could be affecting it.

IDEAS????

if you had a external leak on the motor my bet is that would see some serious oil leaking. at one point my '84 had 3 good sized leaks but yet still held pressure of at least 60-70 at fire up and 20-30 at idle. so check for massive leaks. next bust out with the nee sending unit.. it could have gone bad. if it is still broke you may have to hook the snap-on oil pressure gauge or any other quality device to see if indeed you do have an internal problem. there is a good start

Good diagnosis...I am losing about one quart every 200 miles (through manifold gasket). The oil is full...It sounds ok running...I don't have any diagnostic gauges....Would you risk driving it to a garage under these conditions?

I'm taking it to an engine shop to get it checked out....I'll let you know later what the deal is.
