Did jeep have the wagoneer in 1961. A local was selling one and he said it is titled 1961. My question is would it be a willy's wagoneer? Or is it a bad title or wrong title. The jeep is a 4 door.

Jeep introduced the J-Series in November of 62 for the 1963 model year.
So no way for a 61 to be a FSJ.

Then something’s up. No normal way for a vehicle released in late 62 to end up titled as a 61. I would be suspicious.
Edit. Or the owner was mistaken on the year. have you seen the title?

I was going to go look at and see what shape it was in. I have not seen the title yet.

The year is a mistake, but a Willys Wagoneer is not. Willys was on FSJ namplates until mid 65.
My J-200 has the manufacturer as Willys on the title, so I tell people I do have a Willys Jeep:D .
Only way '61 would be correct is if the seller has a very rare prototype, or he is using the VIN from a Willys wagon. I"m curious to know what the VIN is.

AFAIK, though the early ones have Willy's vin tags, in 63 the company name was Kaiser-Willy's. Kaiser-Willy's became Kasier Jeep Corporation in 64 (iirc), and they just used the Willys nameplates untill they ran out.
oddly even up to 71 (maybe later) they had Willy's tags on the cowl.

Maybe it was '64. I ve noticed junkyard '65 and up FSJ's with Kaiser tags (I used to hoard them from PNP:D ). Actually, didn't Kaiser take over Willys in the mid-50's, but kept the Willys name for another 10 years:confused: .

Yeah, in 53 or 54. Willy's Jeeps and cars where still badged Willy's but the company name was Kaiser-Willys Motors.
Like I said, oddly Jeep kept on using Willy's cowl tags long after Willy's wnt bye-bye. Really can't figure that one out.
The cowl tag on my 71 says Willys, produced by Jeep Corporation. The word Kaiser is absent. AMC bought the Jeep line of products but did not have the right to the Kaiser name.

My 71 says: Willys, Produced by Kaiser Jeep Corporation.
Must have been a left over. I didn't know that AMC removed the Kaiser name from that tag.

Kaiser purchased Willys-Overland in 52. Changed the name to Willys Motors Inc. untill mid 63, when they changed it to Kaiser Jeep Corporation. My 63 Wagoneer has the Willys tag and my Grandpas' 64 had the Kaiser. Thats the way it was explaned to me anyway.

This is getting weird now.
I just had to run outside and check all my early Jeep plates. The '64 says Willys motors and Jeep- no Kaiser, and the '67 and the '69 have Kaiser Jeep tags-no Willys.
I also grabbed my "souvenier "plates ranging from '63 to the AMC era and not one has Kaiser-Willys in the same one. There are also 5 different plate styles.
I'm

I feel dumb now because you all said cowl tags, not VIN plates. Had to go look again adn there is indeed a Willys Jeep label there:banghead: .

The Willys Motors and Kaiser-Willys names where used side by side, but with Kasier-Willy's used less often. I've actualy seen one (1950's) brochure that lists KW as a division of Willy's Motors.
Take this one into thought. Most of the early J-Series lit. is marked
"Kaiser-Willy's Motors. Willys Motors, A division of Kaiser Industires."
Not sure even Jeep knew what was going on as far as thier name was concerned.

I stumbled upon that one last week when visiting a buddy a few doors down. Not Evan Meekum, but the same block. It's been ridden hard and put away wet. I got a few more pics with my camera phone. How much were they asking?

Nice pic's Tom, but yea, that does look a bit rough.
It's certianly not a '61 but I would not worry about it as long as it has a clean (not slavaged) AZ title.

There were 2 concept 'wagoneers' built in the late 50's, 59 to be exact IIRC, they looked a bit more round, sat lower and had the razor style grille along with the J100 badging. Whether they still exist or not is a different story but there are pix online somewhere.

That was Malibu wagon concept in the late 50's. Yes it did have a very similar razor grille.

A friend of mine has one titled as a'62,it's in northern MI,but was originally sold in Toledo,it still has the dealer sticker on the tailgate. It has the tornado 6,3 on the tree, factory winch on the front, about 16,000 miles on it.It was apperantly built the first day of production as it has a serial number in the teens, maybe 11-13 IFIRC.Unfortunatly,it is rusted out beyond repair,as it sat out behind a building all it's life,it was only used for the winch. It might be the oldest one in existance,I'd be curious to see this one's VIN.

willys did make a wagon in 1961 .it kind of looked like a washing machine with flat glass and a hood which in no way could be confused with the later body style. is more likely the seller is ignorant of terminolgy and thinks its a wagoneer.
