I just recieved my shortblock yesterday.I ordered it from blaine motor supply in dallas texas. The short block was $410, plus a $115 core charge(which I am going to keep),plus the freight to get it to massachusetts.$150.So for under $700 I have a nice new short block that the cam is being replace, the timing chainETC.Still a good deal. The machine work itself would be $500 or better.Hopefully it is a quality job,but I asked on this forum and some people had told me they had used them before and wee satisfied-good luck

let me know how you like it once its in. I might just drive up there and get it only a 5 hour drive. There are two places in town that have 360 short blocks they are $450-500 with $100 core. I've been calling around and the cost of the machine work and parts will put me well over $1000 not that big a deal since i only paid $700 for the cherokee (plus its not a daily driver so no rush to get it done).

If you don't need pistons and want to choose your own cam, then you can get a re-ring kit with main bearings for about $135.00 at Autozone.

Unless you want something special, I would opt for the shortblock. I used to rebuild them from the ground up. Now I just buy shortblocks, pull the cam, put my choice of cam in and heads. As 86wagproject mentioned the cost of the Machine Work and rebuild kit would run you over $1000.00. Not for everybody, but I like it. I have done this three times now never a problem and cheaper than building from scratch. ;)

I've never used a kit when I build an engine. I just pick the individual components I want and put them together. I'm building a fresh 350 for my Jeep now and am using Keith Black pistons, comp roller cam, Cloyes timing set, Moroso 6 quart pan, Felpro gaskets, is there a place that you can make your own kit? Has anyone here used any of the kits that are available?

Dang! A short block assy. for under $500.?!?! I'd definitely like to know how they check out.
I spent $1300. for a long block assy. a year ago. Can't be $800. worth of head work on the one I bought...
