I was working on the White Zombie, my 90 wag. Nothing big, just some minor stuff. My wife left me solo with the 2 girls this last weekend, so I didn't have any time for real work. I finished the fitment on the Rhino setup, and I tightened up the belt on the Alt.
Took it for a test drive. I'm running of a gas can in the cargo area. At some point in my test drive the fuel line got cut. I left the rig in my driveway, and the laws of physics allowed about a gallon of fuel to drip onto the driveway and around the backyard.
At the last minute I was needed out of town. I called my wife last night....
I LISTENED TO HER ***** FOR AT LEAST 1 HOUR ABOUT HOW MUCH SHE HATES THE WAGONEER ADDICTION, AND HOW I HAVE TO GET THEM OUT OF THE HOUSE, ETC. "I never signed up for this BS. We now look like the freaks in the neighborhood, with multiple cars in the driveway....etc"
I listened to it for an hour. Give me your guys best advice. She actually wants the cars gone!

Well it isn't goin' to end on the best of terms here. She is lookin' for a complete removal of all your toys where you want to keep them all. You are either goin' to have to reach a fair comprimise or risk losin' all those 4 wheeled toys of your for a bit.
Possibly a remote shop? Sellin' one of your vehicles?

I've been asked a few times about getting rid of my Wrangler....I've flat out told her "I had this jeep before you, I'll have this jeep after you". I'm only joking but she understands my addiction now.
As for your situation...I recommend jewelry or just tell her TFB. Why do women always care what the neighbors think anyway? My neighbors are nutjobs and I rarely talk to any of them! :fsj:
I can tell you from personal experience, women get much less "fired up" about operational vehicles than they do leaky, broken down, rusted out hulks. Fix some stuff on the Wagoneer or just keep it in the garage so it's out of sight.
Good luck! It's a slippery slope!

I use that line on my wife all the time. I explain to her my brother's passion for motorcycles, my buddies love of boating, some guys play video games...
Point is, a man has to have something he can play with or he will go crazy.
As for the "I didn't sign up for this..." If I pointed out every little thing my wife does that I didn't "sign up" for, we'd be here a while...
As for the neighbors, really, are we concerned about what they think? Yes, we need to maintain our property, but c'mon!

Women want a clean looking house. Its the way things are, and the way that they will always be. Do you have the room to put up a shelter for the vehicles? I'm thinking like one of those aluminum barns or something? Also, sell one of them. Use the proceeds to house the others. Make it seem like the hobby is paying for itself. Needless to say, if you have a place off the home site to store them (aircraft hanger), do it. If your wife is not happy, neither are you.
It was leaking gas fast enough to dump a gallon in a day or two, my wife would be pissed as well. It is a fire hazard, and you could be cited for dumping toxic chemicals (if your neighbors hate you for keeping a bunch of FSJ in thier pretty neighborhood).

She is just a girlfriend, and is there for in no place to be making demands like that. If you love her and want a future with this woman, or she is pregnant with your kid - she might have a valid point.
Sorry to be a damp rag. Women can be won over to expensive and messy guy hobbies, but the guy has to be willing to compromise with it.

Well, how bout a girl's perspective on this.:D There is no way on God's green earth I would ever make a demand like that on Bill. Boy's need their toys. Period. I had a co-worker once who complained non-stop at her hubby over his motorcycle, boat, etc.
He finally gave in and sold everything. Worse yet, he did pass away at an early age. Whether there's any corolation or not I sure don't know, but it does make ya wonder.
Bill's just not my hubby. He's my best friend and I wanna keep him around a long long time. If we had the room we'd have more than the 4 Jeeps we currently have.
And nope, I could care less what our neighbors think. If they don't like the way I drive and play in tranny fluid, they can stay off of my sidewalk.:D

I have found the best compromise is:
fix the vehicles nice enough to be dependable, keep your tools picked up, spare parts put out of site, keep the yard looking nice etc.....
She knows I enjoy wrenching on them - as long as they are not a piece of crapola - she's ok with the Jeeps.
If's its a money/time issue - then maybe you will have to wait on the Jeeps and get a cheaper hobby and can spend more time with family. Figure out what makes her tick......

Spilling a gallon of gas upset her, and rightfully so. Let the situation cool off for awhile. See if you can work out some sort of compromise. If you can afford it, maybe rent garage space to unclutter the driveway.

It's simple. Get rid of the wife.
Its just like Janie said. Relationships are partnerships. Anyone who uses the "it's my way or the highway" mentality isn't being a mature loving partner. I've left a lot of ex boyfriends scratching their heads when they said "the horse/jeep/cats/etc go, or I go", cuz I kicked them to the curb. "Don't let the door hit ya in the.........".
If you actually like your wife and want to keep her, you BOTH will have to comprimise somehow.

When she was b******* about your jeep, was it because she truely hates it and thinks it's a money pit, or is it stealing away time from her and your kids? When the Jeep projects start getting in the way of family time, playing with the kids, and household chores is when things are going to start getting very ugly. With young kids, you are going to find out that you just don't have the time like you used to. It doesn't mean you have to take a drastic move and get rid of your collection, but you may have to put your projects on idle for awhile.
I don't know how many vehicles you got, but 5-7 vehicles on a typical suburbia 5000 SF lot is too crowded. The same tucked into a corner of an acre is more tolerant. When we got our place, it had an acre and a decent sized dirt and weed covered area beyond the house and out of the confines of the normal landscaping. I told the wife that will be my play area and everything stays in there. So far, it's worked well. If I fence it and plant hedges in front, then no one will ever know:) . Out of sight, out of mind may hold true.
So the best thing to do is for now is keep everything in an orderly fashion, pick up all spare parts, and if the rigs have flat tires, pump them up. There is a difference between vehicles looking like they are just parked and vehicles that can pass as a small junkyard.

I'm thinking compromise here.
Not all women are going to have Janie's understanding of what we guys need when it doesn't involve them. You're going to need to assess things and make some tough decisions.
You both need your space, and your "space" is invading hers.
If it is possible that merely the gasoline spill triggered the tirade then the fix may be simply to use more care that hazardous fluids aren't spilled.
I have to admit that the severed fuel line, the dispersed gallon of gasoline, and the "running of a gas can in the cargo area...." were quite frankly giving me the heebie-jeebies here--and I'm not even close to where you are. We get so involved with these glorified antique machines and their inherent incontinence that we lose track of the fact that some of these spills are compounds that are dangerous to the kids--and to the adults as well. Especially gasoline. The fumes inside the passenger area can build up, then you flip a switch and......
A friend of mine put the nature of gasoline in a succinct description....
A travelling kind of a feller
Stored gasoline cans in his cellar.
In the gathering vapor
He lighted a taper--
His travels are now interstellar......
'Nuff said, I think.

She took off on her own and left the kids with you for the w/e? OK, that is her time, can see that, but then to unload on you about your time/hobby is not right. Point the old "pidgeon with no tail feathers" at her and send her down the highway. Mine is starting to think my chero is getting to be unreliable and is making noises on looking for a newer model of something else, I told her I am as well, end of subject.

well, I'll give ya an opinion. But please take it as such. I've been married 20 years and I've learned a few things but still have a lot that I haven't picked up on yet. I also have 2 daughters and again this is only my opinion.
I'd say the leaking gas was just the trigger. There's probably something else going on here that she's not expressing. And seeing that you've got 3 women (don't care how old they are) in the house, your going to have "issues" between them. Girls and boys both fight. But girls do it louder. And that can get on anybody's nerves. I'd say if you talk to her you'll find there's a whole boat load of other things that went down (completely unrelated to your Jeeps) and you took the brunt of it.
Now, this is a good thing. And let me explain why. It means she's normal. I don't think I've met a woman(and a few guys) yet who doesn't keep things pent up and unloads when you least expect it. And by unloading on you, she's not fully taking it out on the kids.
Sorry to be so long winded, Just a personal opinion.
Keep cool. And like some of the other posts have mentioned. It's a partnership. You both gotta tow the line.

i heard alot of grumblings when it was me playing with my 70 d100. why do you need that? how much is it gona cost? that kind of thing. then my brother ended up with an 88 gw. my wife had to talk me into it because we had a 67 bug in pieces in the garage that i didn't take apart, that was for her/us/me to restore. i didn't need or want another older car to fix/play with. but i broke down and decided a 4x4 would be ok to have:banghead: now the sickness begin's. best thing i've ever done was letting her have it. cause when i get hers done or mostly done it's the 70's turn, besides it's good practice:D . so maybe you need to find somthing she might like, say an old vw bug (cause their cute)

90% of all the women in the world are smarter than you'll ever be; most notably because you'll never realize it. A woman who's willing to marry you is definitely smarter than you'll ever be. The sooner you come to that realisation the happier you'll be. Having a happy home life is more important than any automobile, two wheel, animal, habit, or whatever the case may be. That being said, you have to have something to do or you'll just go plumb mad. The happiest people learn how to balance the lot.
When we bought our house, I had an 84 wag that had slowly transformed itself into a butt ugly wheeling rig with no roof, half doors, and 35s with no lift (get the picture). We lived in low scale apartments at the time and it didn't much matter what the crackheads thought. We bought our house, in a nice neighboorhood, nice home, very Leave It to Beaveresque. I made the decision that I didn't want this heap taking up a bay in the garage, and definitely wasn't going to leave it in the driveway to collect leaves and glares from the neighbors. Took it to the junkyard, was jeepless for over 2 years. Now I have an 85, it's in good shape. I've only had to do minor tinkering and replacing, until the engine rebuild which is about to conclude shortly. My wife gave me her blessing to buy this new one because I had done without for a while, plus she knew having one and driving it would make me happy. She hasn't complained about this one once (as compared to the last one, let me tell ya). She even likes to take it out for a drive everyonce in a while. The whole time, I spend vast amounts of time with the wife and kid (second one coming in a few months), and also maintain my studies in Mechanical Engineering. You don't have to give up the toys, just don't let the "obsession" become an obsession.
Moral of the story, pare the collection down to one, maybe two. Focus on getting good looking, good running rigs. When you don't have parts scattered everywhere, and stuff leaking everywhere, you and the wife will be much happier. As for the current snit, clean up stuff, let it sit for a while, and it will blow over.
Take this for what it's worth.

When my mom freaked out about me buying the 3rd Jeep she went all crazy like that and saying we are the rednecks of our neighborhood, I'm going to have them all towed, bla bla bla bla etc. I drove her around our neighborhood and showed her all the houses, almost everyone had a rusty old ford, chevy, or dodge in the driveway. Plus two of my Jeeps are camo so you can't see them anyway :D . She still hates them but doesn't complain as much.

Let's see, I have an 89 GW, 83 J10, 72 CJ5, a late 60's something Jtruck (Zack's actually) and my wife has an 05 TJ all at my house with three of them currently in the back yard. At first she thought all of my JEEP buddies were knuckle draggin, beer drinkin, cigarette smoking, wife beatin' neanderthals. Then she met them and realized that she was right! Only kidding, she met them, they are good guys, and if I am not in the basement rebuilding a carb or polishing a part, putting stuff on ebay, buying stuff on ebay, working on one of the jeeps in the back yard, at Zack's shop, or wheelin' I am BORED STIFF and DRIVE HER NUTS! I don't neglect my kids, jeep parts don't come before food, I work full time, I repair the house and cut the grass when needed. It needs to be a blance. My wife has her hobby, scrapbooking, and I have mine. Why is one better than the other? Also, if I am tinkering with the jeep at home, I am not at the bar, having an affair, or doing anyhting else that I should not be doing.

go buy a few acres with lots of trees, that way you can hide jeeps, trucks, the old boat, and various parts behind the trees and she wont care. The only down side is that if you have more land, you want to fill it with more parts.

Dude, I was/am in the same boat. You need to go back and read my thread "I'm in big F'n trouble". I got a TON of good advise, and ultimately just ended up moving the Jeep to an alternate location. I am the guy with the farm full of Jeeps, and as much as it bugs me not having them here at the house to play with, it is SOOOO much easier on the home life. In fact, one of my neighbors even started talking to me again yesterday! Just find a friend with a place to store the truck, or take it to a long term storage yard....usually about $20 per month to keep it there. Work on it when you have time, and everything will fall into place. Good luck!

Compromise. My girlfriend has been more than patient with my hobby. I have my 80 j-10 and my 66 mustang (on jackstands) on the side of the house. I have a 79 j cab and a set of d44's in the back yard. I just bought an 82 j-10 which is parked out front. We've taken numerous out of state road trips for certain jeep parts. In return I fix and repair the (her) house and car and maintain the yard. Plus I do things with her that she wants to do. The main thing I've learned is always buy a better looking truck that what you just got rid of. Plus, and she's told me, is that as long as I'm working on and making progress on the vehicles she can tolerate it. Plus I try to sell spare parts to make some money back which won't take from food, house, clothes ect. money. She know's I'll be this way for life and has pretty much accepted it. At least she knows where I am which is either under one of my vehicles or at the junkyard. I try to include her in my hobby but she doesn't have much interest in it. Her son doesn't either.
At least my girls (7 and 13) think it's cool.
I like my neighbors and they like me. I'm always helpful to them when possible. We have a bunch of young kids nearby that curse alot and play loud music and can't sit out front without leaving trash all over. They make me look great.
Good luck! I think the gas spill was the last straw as well.

They stopped making FSJs in '91. Women are still in production. Keep the Jeep. Marriage is a compromise, she's gonna have to learn to deal with it. You're not out sleeping around or beating her or spending tons of money on booze and drugs, you're trying to restore a piece of Americana. I would guess that this has deeper roots than your Wag.

I can't believe that with all this successful and unsuccessful maritial experience, no one has gone for the obvious solution.
Just tell your wife that you'll either be wrenching on your Jeep or looking for sex on a daily basis...it's her choice. If she gets your point and stops crabbing about your Jeeps...your problem is solved. If she chooses the sex...you won't worry about Jeeps anymore. :)

And nope, I could care less what our neighbors think. If they don't like the way I drive and play in tranny fluid, they can stay off of my sidewalk.:D
Oh God, I love you AND Anne Coulter.

Did she buy them? Are they hers? Man up and tell her they can go if she puts all her shoes inside them first.
