pulling chrome caps on dana 44's?

Full time Dana 44's, chrome end caps. Is there a trick to knocking these things off without mangling them too much? Am I missing something? I'm just using the hammer and punch approach. Thanks.

Pry them off, I think, with a big screwdriver

I work around them with a large screw driver. Like prying off a hubcap.
