Ok...I always buy the same stuff, guess I had my head burried in a hole for the last few years.:rolleyes: I always bought Castrol GTX 20-50 and Fram filters....

This Time the NAPPA guy recomended a WIX filter - said it's better than Fram:confused:

To be honest I never heard of them...Can anyone chime in as to their quality? I bought 2 for breaking in my new Engine

Yes, Wix is good filter.


Fram are pretty much junk...somebody will post up the website that compares how all the oil filters are built shortly I'm sure.

Napa Gold = Wix filter. That is all I use.

Frams are glued together cardboard and plastic, they won't each certainly fail, but it's not unlikely for one to come apart inside. I like to use the K&N and Mobil One filters, spending the extra $5 each oil change isn't much of an investment at all to ensure I have the best made oil filter.

Wix is excellent - OEM for a lot of badged names.

I have yet to lose a AMC engine since I started using them - 11 yrs and a lot of miles on over 10 FSJs

Keep in mind that filter study is old and companies are bought and sold and standards are changed to suit the profit ratio.
Wix and Purolator have been good filters. But on engines under warrantee I use factory filters good or bad. I marks-o-lot the mileage on each filter and save them in case any problems develop.

NapaGold=wrecked engine :(

Put a NapaGold filter on my Comanche's 4.0. Took off from the house, turned the corner and heard something odd. Sounded like something was spraying in the engine compartment. I stop at the stop sign, pop the hood to see oil spraying all over the place. The danged filter malfunctioned and totally blocked the oil flow to the engine. As I got back in the truck to shut the engine down, I notice my oil pressure gauge was pegged.

Ruined my oil gauge sender and the filter was blown up like a ballooon. The main and rod bearings were wrecked.

No more Napa or Wix for me. Purolator or Mobile1.

BTW, the Comanche is being resurrected finally after 2 years.

True that is why cummins, international, ford , chrysler and several other manufacturers list wix as approved on the list of approved filters... as well as a few others.

Fram to this day is not.

I started using WIX because I needed a filter with an anti flow back valve for the oil accumulator on my built small jeep. Good filter in my opinion (the counter jockey told me that WIX is the filter most used by “racers”), but I now use the same application, WIX pn#51515 for the relocation kit but in a K&N filter.

I checked the Hastings site...sounds like a pretty good filter. I called a Denver distributor and got a quote of $6.40ea for a case of 12 and $5.95ea for 36 (plus UPS). If anyone wants to order some I'd get 'em in and send 'em out. With a couple Jeeps I'd be looking at keeping about 8 on my shelf. Or if no one else is interested I'd probably just order a case since the cost is about the same as a premium Wix. Just lemme know.

After reading oil filter study, threw my Frams away(the bright orange ones;tough guards are better). Now use Purolator, same price but better quality. Wix is good but slightly higher priced. For fatter wallets, K&N and Mobil 1.

I got a Fram Tough Guard for the initial startup for my Jeep. I figured it would be good for the 20-30 minutes I need it to break in the cam. Then I'll change the oil and go with a K&N filter.

The last 3 wix i had had a drain back problem so i got a purolator for now, trying to get the parts house to stock the mobil one for me.
