Something I noticed while driving to work. I was alongside an early 70' s Ford pickup and noticed the rear step bumper is the same as the 70's j-trucks. I thought maybe they retrofitted it, but a week later, I saw another same era Ford with the same bumper. Then I saw a nice 60's GMC with one too.
Did one company make these and farm them out to the automakers? I'm sure there is a difference in length, but the shape and profile is the same as the Jeep.
Still looking for a decent J-10 bumper and this might be an easier route. I think Fords are wider, so I would have to cut it down and redo the profile at the ends.

At least some of the 60's Gladiator rear bumpers where made by a company called Flex-N-Gate Sales Inc. I'm sure they made bumpers for other companies as well.
Why not just make one?

They made the bumpers for the 70's J-Trucks too.

I looked into this and it seems the early 70s chevy/gmc step bumpers are closest in dimension to the J series bumpers- only a couple of inches wider. Ferd truck bumpers are a lot wider.

Those are the bumpers.
My J200 bumper was made by Barden Bumpers. It still has the original tag.
I thought about making a custom one for the J10, but decided to stay stock.

why not call the Jeep stealership??? I know it sounds crazy but I think they still have a few left for the 80's model trucks. both in chrome and white. it may take finding the right guy to talk to, who knows how to look it up and find 'em but I believe they are still available. Mine had to come from indiana, I think, when I bought mine.

yep thats the flex-n-gate rear bumper. great bumper if you ask me, nice and heavy duty. too bad it can be hard to find one thats not all rusted out. I've got one on my 85, my honchos chrome bumper is dented up and rusted so I'll prolly go out and get the nice one I saw at the junkyard today. Worked up near there today, and stopped in for a look when I had a brake. Unfortunately no time to take it, not that I had the right tools anyway.

Reminds me that I need to go take a trip and get the nice one that's just down the road from me.
I built this stock looking one that will get me by for now. I'm want to get my hands on a wrap around unit.

Thanks. I was actually hunting around for a factory bumper like yours for a while, but gave up. They just don't exist around here. Of courrse I found that nice one I mentioned like 5 minutes up the road from my house a week or so after I built mine:cool:
I still need to get some grip-tape on the center step. Amazing how slipery it gets.

I didnt know that they used em on fords and chevys. dunno about chevys but most fullsize fords are at least 6 inches wider than our trucks and the frame rails are farther apart too.
KaiserMan, that bumper looks great! Almost wouldnt know that its not a stock one. I need to get some grip tape for mine.

Yeah Thom that thing looks great! What kind of metal did you use to build it. If my J2000 was not a thrift side then I would want something like you built.

I cut a piece of 6x6 3/16" wall tubing in half, cut the ends at an angle and welded in a piece of 6x2 3/16" wall tube inbetween the two pieces. Capped the ends with 1/8" plate. I cut the wrap around ends from a piece of the 6x6" and used some 1/4" tubing to make the rounded corners. The step plate is a piece of 3/8" plate.

i got sick of looking so I got a dozer because I was also sick of looking for a reese hitch. I have a chebby step bumper here the dimentions are right but the mounting points are 10 in too narrow

I have one that's in good shape it has rust where the hitch mounts..the way these things are made i can't see any of them not rusting...
The rust starts between the plates..where they folded the metal and added a plate to make it solid for the ball...

Mine rotted there too. I'm still going to attempt to straighten mine, so I cut the welds on teh c-channel structure to separate the bumper from the mount. Pretty (c)rusty inside.

Hi All!
Been a member here for awhile (first post though), and know several members here from other online forums. My J20 has been parked in the garage since 2000  and hasn't seen daylight!
That's about to change soon...:drivin:
I'm bringing this thread back from the dead to see if anyone's built/bought any new J-pickup rear bumpers, or found any OEMs that fit decent as-is, or with modifications.
Been tempted to grab one off of the newest Ford F150s, cut it down in width to match the Jeep, and see how it looks (since the lines are pretty squarish, might look decent  )
Thoughts?

I wanted a factory style rear bumper for my J20 and had to settle on one from a wrecking yard about 70 miles away. It wasn't perfect by any stretch but I've been working on straightening the bends, welding the holes and getting it ready to paint. I did some grinding on the welds this afternoon and used some body filler to smooth the grinding marks. I still need to sand the filler before I prime and paint it. It's a type II (plastic end caps) so I'll have to figure out what to do about the bare ends since the caps are long gone.

I've done some searching and contacted Westin about the overall length of their universal full-size step bumpers: 75"...the same as the factory Jeep step bumper.
Found their "outlet" also, and ordered & received a #21007 (chrome) for $150.85 delivered, which is a good deal I think. It's slightly flawed in it's finish, but only near the bottom on the left side. Hardly noticeable.
Looks like some trimming will be in order to get it to fit the contours of the bed, doesn't look like too bad of a task. Of course bumper brackets will need modified/fabricated, depending...
Will post pics and what I had to do to get it mounted soon, once I get around to actually installing.
Here's a linky to the Westin outlet for anyone that's interested:

Maybe fab some metal ends that bolt on until you find some.

On a side note: That's good to know about GMCs using those, maybe I can find an aftermarket clone and mod it to work on my truck while making it look stock. I won't settle for anything but stock look so I'm either always going to be without or fab up a clone.

Here's a pic of my re-furbed bumper after paint:

The bumper in the above pics with the steel caps looks like a good candidate to me even though it has a twisted end. Mine looked about like that before I staightened it. They are pretty easy to work with. I wish I had taken some pics before and during the prcess.

That looks like a lighter duty version of the one from my '73 J4000 I've had up for sale. Soon it will join the scrap yard pile when I get tired of tripping over it and the hitch

I saw your bumper and hitch you had, just wish you were closer or I would be all over those. But just like when I was trying to find a factory bumper for my MJ... :banghead: I love the rustbelt!
