I know this is more of a CJ question, but has anyone out there tried building a Dana 18 configuration tcase using the low range reduction unit from the Quadra-Trac as an underdrive similar to the setup used for the Warn/Saturn ODs? This would, in effect, result in a doubler without any added length (my rear driveshaft tube is all of about 4 inches long). It would appear this could be done with an indexed adapter plate/bearing retainer and a new main drive gear which could possibly use a modified gear from the overdrive units. The 1339 reduction is 2.57:1, which coupled with the factory (2.46:1) or TerraLow (3.15:1) 18 gears, would result in a low-low of 6.3:1 and 8.1:1 respectively. From my observations, the reduction unit from the 1339 looks to have way more beef than the OD units.

yes, its been done - my neighbour has done precisely the same thing for his flatfender.

He took a slab or aluminium plate, basically faced both t-cases on either side, drew outlines, torched the shape approximately, then using an indexer made the opening that both t-cases could agree on ( indexed it so that the shaft centers were dead on) and drilled on either side for bolts and countersunk screws.

Nice setup

He has a crawl ratio in Lo-range of approx 6.3 x 5.13 (axle) x 6.x (trans) = 203

His flattie is powered by the original flathead motor and is very weak, so I am sure he needs all the help he can get.

His axles are HP Dana 60 and a Ford 9" modified.

Wow, this sounds like a really cool idea. Does he have any pictured of this setup?

no, but I can always go over and snap a few this weekend.
He is the ultimate redneck fabricator :)

For example - I gave him a 300SD mercedes turbo diesel motor and 4-spd trans - he returns the trans to me - I ask him - "Aaron, what did you put behind it "

his answer - "I traced the bellhousing of the benz 4-spd on a sheet of paper, transfered it to a 1/2 " thick block of metal, cut it out then did the same on the reverse side with A t-19 from a scout, torched the center section out (basically what he did for the quadratrac / dana-18)

now he has a Commanche with a mercedes diesel + t-19 + dana-20

I think the Land Rover guys also use the low range units for something like this.

getting things to bolt together is the easy part. making them work is totally another ballgame ;)

id like pics and details of how he made it work. knowing what the input gear looks like on an 18,and knowing how the splined shaft goes into the QT im having a hard time imagining how a person would go from one to the other after physically bolting them together...

more pics and info,plz :drivin:
