When you installed the intake did you pull the dist?If you did you may way off on timing and maybe 180 degrees out on dist.Bring #1 cylinder to TDC and check to see where the rotor is pointing if not on #1 in the dist you will have to pull it again(make sure dist is fully seated with the oil pumpm drive too).

is there a way to tell if the #1 is at TDC without taking off the valve cover?

Well you can pull the #1 plug and stick in a screw driver and turn it over by hand. You can match up TDC on your balancer with your timing marks. If the screw driver is pushed out then you are on TDC compression. If your marks line up and it is not pushed out then you are on TDC exhaust.

Yes remove the spark plug and put a long rag in the hole loosely. It will blow out when you come up to TDC

i used a long skinny screwdriver to find tdc when i did the timing belts on my other cars. it works great. just hafta take care not to jam the driver in to far. keep it straight in the hole and you're set.

I went back out with some starting fluid to see if i could anything. I got it to backfire once, and almost start a few times. Im pretty sure that i have the dist in the right way, just that the timing is off. My dad thinks that the carb is not getting enough fuel to the cylinders, and that is why its not starting. Do i need to prime the carb the first time I start it?

Dude,
your timing is off. Put the timing mark on TDC, pull your dist cap and see if it is pointing to #1, if is 180° out, then turn your crank around once, and then check your dist cap. Turn your dist to point right at #1, should be close enough to start.
You never answered the earlier post, did you pull the dist?

yes i did pull the dist. i never turned the engine during the time it was out, and i made a mental note of where the point was pointing for when i put it back in.
I will thoroughly investigate tomorrow morning, and make sure that the dist is not 180deg out.
thanks again for all the help

The screwdriver will be pushed out at any TDC position, compression or exhaust with this method, unless you are saying the screwdriver makes an airtight seal in the spark plug hole. The rag method is better. On the compression stroke (the one you want for setting the distributor at the post of cylinder #1), the rising piston will create pressure inside the cylinder. On the exhaust stroke, the exhaust valve will be open and no pressure will build up.
