Going to look at a GW for my wife this weekend. 1988 with 98K miles. Body is in excellent shape (no rust FL vehicle). I wanted to know about engine/tranny defects/flaws. Anything I should keep my eye out for?
Thanks-

Smell the oil and the tranny fluid. Yes, smell them. If the tranny fluid is burnt smelling, or brown, there may be future problems. The oil should not be totally watery and black, and make sure it doesn't smell like gas. Check the oil pressure, and look for blue smoke out of the exhaust. The engine shouldn't "tick" or have any knocks.

Thanks-
I had a CJ once with the 304. If memory serves, it is a very stout engine with few flaws. I just wanted to get advice from people who deal with them more often.
Is the 727 a good tranny? Strong and dependable?

Even with a great body (the Jeep) the frame may have rust - very common. Look at the frame on the driver's side in front of the rear wheel.
Most everything else will be more obvious - windows and locks functioning, etc.
