.....and my starter was smoking, and I can't figure out what it is. Does anyone know what it might be? It kept on running after I pulled the negative cable, then it shut off after 30 seconds. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

the starter solenoid is on the passenger-side inner fenderwell?

Yepper, mine did that to, could also be your ignition switch... I hope not. Solenoids are cheap... Switches are difficult.

Also, I'm not sure where your solenoid is on your rig, (V8 Right?) thats where it is on the 6.

when mine wouldn't shut off i replaced the key ignition switch in the colomn. You got to get some tools to take the colomn apart but the KEY ignition switch is fairly cheap. You could try that if you key switch seams all messed up..

6, mine did the same thing. Replaced the starter solonoid and the ignition, since it was boogered up anyway.

No more problems.

was the motor running when you pulled the battery cable? I don't understand how the starter could have keep running for 30 seconds otherwise.

ok, replaced the solenoid and it was fine until I pulled back in the driveway tonight, and it did it again. So, is it the ignition now? Or is there something else that I'm missing?

Check your wiring harness where it runs along the engine. It's possible the wire from the alternator and/or the main feed wire from the solenoid to the fusebox has melted by the solenoid activation wire in there. this would explain why it was able to start on its own and why it,s intermittent(you moved the wires when you replaced the solenoid and when you pulled into the driveway they touched again. sounds like previous adventures let all the smoke out of the starter. grab starter out of parts rig. they are pretty easy to r/r
