How have you routed your antenna? Also any pics of the moutning of the unit would be awesome.

antenna mounted? I have a magnet mount that I was thinking on the roof . .sorta old school looking . .but I dont think on the roof would be practical . .I thought about around the rear, but didnt want to get in the way of the tailgate.

I went out through the fire wall down the frame and back to the antenna

I have a dual whip setup. Magnetic bases on both and I run it through the rear window. It seels pretty good. Then I run it around the seat and stuff it down into the cracks. Then mine go between the hinge and the seat. From there I run it under my floor mats and next to the front seats and then up to my radio. I have it mounted on the floor in front of the heater vents and AC control. I will get some pics later.

That's what I did with mine, too. I'm using a fiberglass antenna with a bumper mount, and put it pretty much right in front of the taillight. The tailgate still opens, and it's thin enough that you can still see the light. It sits kinda low - the tip is just above the roof line - which is good for wheelin' through trees but the range suffers a bit.

9 foot steel with a 3 bolt body ball mount, on the pass side in about the same spot as the fuel filler is on the drivers side. Just in front of the side marker. Cable routed inside trim panels and under carpet to the unit which is under the a/c ducting. Used a mag mount on the roof for a long time, had to go and reset when in trees and brush once in awhile, but no biggie. Went to the whip as a better flag mount when on the beach and out in the dunes.

what are the pros/cons to mounting on the rear of the vehicle vs the front like at the hood line?

Mostly where your transmit pattern is going to be. Mine would be strongest off the left front of the rig. Best pattern would be if mounted dead center of rig (x the bumper corners and plant the antenna on the crossing point). Other downfall is having to punch out a 3/4 to 1 inch hole and 3 screw holes in a 1/4 panel vs getting a bracket plate mount and hiding the screws under the edge of the hood. Easier cable routing as well with the hood line.

Mag mount on the roof till go out wheeling then it gets moved to the center rear of the hood, the radio is under the dash.

The rig in my avatar pic I ran the antenna up the B pillar and permanent mounted to the roof.

The other rig I ran the wire under the carpet out the tailgate-- I cut a notch in the seam where the tailgate weatherstripping sits, and ran it through the slot and behind the weatherstripping and mounted it to the rear bumper so it sat between tailgate & taillight.

Another option is to run it out the flat panel above the taillight through a grommet and mount to that panel.

I've got a magnet mount on the J10, comes in the corner of the pass door, behind the seat, under the carpet and to the radio. I did something similar on the 85 GW. I put a ball mount on the XJ and routed the line thru the cabin behind all the interior panels, alot of work but for some reason they were off before so it made things that much easier.

For the '79 I want to do a mirror mount up on the Tad-Rack, since it's permanently mounted I think I'm going to drill a hole in the roof to run assorted wires into then seal it up real well. Not too sure on where the radio will go, maybe in place of the ash tray...

My Cherokee had a bumper mount ball and 8' whip on the driver side. With that length, I had a good SWR reading.

The J-10 has a 4' magnet mount dead center on the roof.
