View Full Version : Help with vacuum
I've decided that this web page needs one thing... a place where there are pictures posted of the engine compartments of those of you that have your wiring/vacuum hoses hooked up right.
Imagine how nice it would be for us saps who jsut bought a "new" FSJ in which the DSPO had completely re-routed/removed all the vacuum lines, to be able to pull up some pics online of a properly routed engine compartment.
It wouldn't take a lot of work...just maybe three pics (one from each side of the engine comparttment) with some nice lighting.
Trying to decifer those vacuum diagrams in the books is just too much of a PITA! THis would make it soooooo easy. So how 'bout it administrators? Can all those blessed with the correct routing send in pictures which could then be posted in the tech library?
In the meantime...anybody got any decent engine compartment pics that would help me to figure out my '73 360?
It runs like poo and I'm thinking this vacuum prob may be why.
For example...there are NO vacuum hoses coming off that little neck on the back of the water neck! I know one is s'posed to go to the vac advance on the dizzy, but the vac advance is hooked into the carb! It is a friggin disaster...help please??? :(

This is a great idea. I know my vaccum lines are all screwed up.

I used the diagram. I opened the book, stood in front of the jeep, bashed my head on the hood latch, said &^%$#, and traced every tube one at a time. It worked. Be sure to check your one way valves t o insure that they work.
The diagram is posted here in the tech section:
http://www.ifsja.org/tech/fuel/pictures/8cylvac.gif
The vacuum advance is hooked to a CTO, then to the vacuum. Some re-route this to go directly to the carb thereby circumventing the CTO allowing advance when the system is cold. Frankly, I just hooked mine up normally, although I used HEAVY hose coming off the carb as the small stuff was collapsing.

It's not that we all dont appreciate your curtsing and headbashing....it's jus that I have lots of things I need to do to my Jeeps and that aint one of them I am looking forward to.
Let's look to the future...a future where all FSJ's have their vacuum lines hooked up correctly because it is not a gigantic PITA....a future where we can bash our heads against our bumpers for some other, non-vacuum FSJ problem...a future we can all look forward to!
So how bout it? Spare us vacuum virgins from vacuum hell....post some pictures! Comeon, I'll show you mine if you show me yours :D
Or you could save a lot of people a hassle and just loosen up with $40 and buy the factory shop manual for your rig :D
Honestly, pictures won't help. My hoses look like a rats nest even though they are all connected properly. The problem is that they don't all sit nice and pretty no matter what you do. The best bet is to find a good diagram in a shop manual. Or, if you have one like my '85, the diagram will be printed on the emissions sticker under the hood.
Here's the scoop, I have a Haynes manual and a Chiltons. It's not that I dont have a source for those *(&^** drawings...it's that I don't want to look at them.
I realize that a picture may not help when it is an 80s model that is choked with emissions crap...my 73 has a fairly empty engine compartment and I GUARANTEE that I would appreciate AND use some pictures from a similar year engine compartment...
Don't get me wrong...there's definately some value to be had by sitting around looking at those stupid manuals for hours...I just don't want to pay the price for that value.
The fact is that I have a hard time with the diagrams because the lines all go to little parts and pieces that are identified by some technical term. I don't know what that peice looks like...even if I was looking at it.
That's why I think an actual pictures library on this site would be beneficial.
(OTher wise, i am gonna have to JB Weld all my hoses together or something...huh? ;) )
Sooooo
If I am so wrong about the pictures not helping...put your money where you mouth is, send me some pics and let me try it. ;)

Here's another "scoop"... In my above post I said buy the "FACTORY" shop manual. I didn't say buy the Childrens or Haynes manual. For what you paid for the two of those worthless rags you could have bought the FACTORY(as in published by AMC) manual.

Son don't take this personally but if you can't read a simple vacuum diagram you better pray you'll never need to read a wiring schematic. :(
What "exactly" are you looking for? I'll neeed Year/model/eng/trans/cooling system/CA or 49 state...blah blah if it's a late rig(it's one diagram)?
If it's for a 73...there is no one diagram. I can send the individual component ones for 73 but make sure your anxiety medicine is close by becuase it's about a dozen jpgs. For a 73 I'll need to know V8 or six?
You say... "My hoses look like a rats nest even though they are all connected properly."
If your eng bay is a mess but you say everything is correctly plumbed why not just lengthen/shorten the hoses and route them where and as neatly as you want?
Anyway if you want the 73 stuff email me...

It runs fine and I can follow the diagram. Why do I need to make it pretty? Besides, with all of the hoses running everywhere on my '85, it's near impossible to make it "neat". Maybe if I had a '73 with only a couple hoses, I could make it neat. But why bother? Like I say, it runs fine.
- My bad on the FACTORY manuals...BTW the other two came with my wag when I bought it...I didn't pay "for the two of those worthless rags."
- Yes I have prolems reading vac diagrams and yes I do pray I never have to read those infernal lectercal diagrams
- My prob is a 73 J4000 6000GVW 360 V-8/Th400/QT with an auxialliary tranny cooler that I beleive is a PO install that I am assuming was a 49 states vehicle
Yes, you are right...lotsa diagrams...are the FACTORY diagrams any better than Haynes or Chiltons? A vac diagram is a vac diagram right...as far as 8 JPEGS worth of info, now you are starting to come around to my original point which is to post some pictures of the engine compartment onto this site. Honestly is that really such a bad idea that you have to jump on my case, make fun of my Jeep manuals and infer that I am a moron cause I dont want to spend 4 hours staring at a *&^^& vac diagram?
- the rat's nest scenario was posted by Derf...not me...my prob is the opposite...some DSPO removed all the rats nesting and I am trying to restore it.
So thanks but no thanks...I'll figure it out myself.

Jode, I think the picture idea is good, btw, it's just that there are so many years and models etc.
The Factory diagrams are better, much, btw. I have both. The Haynes and Chiltons are copies, the factory is crisp and clear, that is why everyone recomends it. However, I used the posted diagram here, as at the time, all I had was the Haynes, which I could not read.
I think the Picture Idea is good, hopefully someone with a '73, w/vaccum hooked and a camera will step up!!
I did not understand your question about the 'water neck', not sure if my '84 has that.

Anyone know where I can get a FSM? My Jeep dealer doesn't even recognize the letters AMC! Ha,Ha

The later manuals are a LOT larger due to all the gadgets the later rigs have so don't plan on getting one for $40 new. That refers to the earlier(70's era) used manuals.
Leon Rosser sells brand new factory manuals for the 1990 year Jeeps. It's a two vol set the second vol being the electrical manual which alone is 1" thick. The main manual is about 2" thick. It's $89.95 I think and well worth it if you plan on doing your own work beyond oil changes.

All...
on this factory service manual thing...I have a 91 FSM, and it has a VAC diagram....I have scans of a 89 vac diagram, 87 vac diagram and 90 vac diagram,84, 86,88[mitchell manual]...
Since these years of GW had the smae carbs and the same intakes and the same charcoal canisters ...one would think that everyone of these diagrams would be the same.......
guess what...they are all different!!!!
well how about that......
the factory service manual I have an [1991] also has the vacuum diagram in a conveinent 3" X 4" size so you can fit it in your wallet, and take it with you...
I tell you what ...the factory service manuals for these jeeps are "WAY OVER RATED"....I have one for a FORD mustang 1987 and it's 5 volumes, with large images and detailed...not "Assembly is the reverse of disassembly" BS....JEEP FSJ manuals are an embarassement compared to it...
I guess unless your planning on rebuilding the tranny or Xfer case or engine or something....go spend the $90 on part of an intake or carb upgrade......FSM 's are ajoke for later GW's in my opinion...
the haynes had better info on the seat removal...brake cylinder repacement...window replacement...fuel tank sending unit replacement...
I'm glad I only spent 25 on ebay for my 2 volumes...otherwise I'd be upset smile.gif smile.gif smile.gif ...
No offense but a FSM is "crock" for vacuum diagrams....

hmmmmmmmmmmmmm
seems like everyones panties are bunching up over this one...could it be because there is no GENERAL DISCUSSION FORUM!!!!!!!!!!
anyway, my vacuum problem is simple...and no manual will help....most of my emissions stuff is ripped off.....all except my egr, and they probably took that off too but realized there was a gaping hole in the intake so they put it back. So, being that I have to find new and exciting places to route vacuum lines on an 89 GW w/360, a FSM or anything else for that matter won't work.
Is there anyone with a newer GW with no AIR PUMP that has a decent vacuum routing, or do all of them run like mine....

If you are a team member of NASA then you should be able to lay out all the Vacuum lines yourself. If you are talented and can follow diagrams, any sticker or manual diagram should give you the information you need to do the job. If you are neither of the above drive a 70 rig........They have two Vacuum lines, one for Vacuum advance and one for power brakes. Hmmm no wonder I like my 70. :D

I think I'm with jode on this, and I'd happily claim moron status to get some photos for my rig. I drove over to a complete stranger's house a few months back and asked to look under his hood to check out his vacuum hose layout because I thought mine had been butchered. Way easier than deciphering one of those diagrams.
Of course I understand there were lots of different layouts, depending on the year, engine, equipment, location, etc. But a complete set of photos would be a great team project, wouldn't it? Right, guys?

79 vacuum mapping .....
ok, i've had the Cherokee for about a month now. I got under the hood last night gropping around. Here's what I have ...
360 2v, TH400, QT, Cruise.
The former owner apparently did not let just anybody work on this one. It appears that great care was taken to keep things as original as possible.
The entire vacuum hose system is intact with the exception of having the EGR valve and QT lines disconnected. The QT hoses are just hanging loose. The EGR line has a 1/4-20 bolt blocking it off.
Every vac line is dry rotted and/or oil soaked to the point of uselessness. My son and I are going to team up this weekend, after he cuts the grass<g>, and replace every vac hose. We'll take extra care to document and photo where everything is and try to create a readable map for those interested.
It appears the following vac sizes are used on this model.
5/32,7/32,3/16,1/4,5/16
we'll get things posted as quick as we can.
