Here is what a rod bearing looks like after a Cam grinds itself to death. Less than 2 hours of run time on this bearing. The small spots are metal shavings that embedded themselves into the bearing except for the groove cut into the bearing and the crank journal the bearing did as it was supposed to..........burried the particles keeping them away from the crank. I would have been able to reuse the crank as all the bearings pulled the debri away from the crank, except this one :( To big of piece I guess

This engine trashing itself had nothing to do with him not draining the water out of it.............If I could blame him for it I would.

i dunno pete, those particles would have had to be circulated through the oil system to get to the bearings.filter should have stopped those pieces?

Believe me the filter did not stop Jack! and it was a WIX. I had particles clean up to the top of the heads. When I pulled the push rods I had silver sludge coming out of them. I believe the reason the filter did not stop the crap from going through the motor is because the pressure reg blew from all the particles going through it. I had a heck of a time getting the plunger out of the pump, it was stuck so bad. New Pump is Junk too :( Wish I could get a pic of the 1st cam bearing, since it gets a full shot straight from the pump.................. It is toast

yikes.

yep-i bet you're right on the pessure reg.

have you thought about eliminating the bypass in the pump? not the pressure relief valve, but the bypass for "in case the filter plugs"? the newer amc pump covers don't have them from the factory.

Unlucky. Sounds like your engines been giving you a lot of grief one way and another. Stick with it: every time I read your sig, and come to '500 caddy...' I just mentally covert that to litres (8.3 right?), and think: 'wow - that's one cool truck.'

I never considered it, not sure I see the point of eliminating the by-pass. Under normal conditions there would be no issues with it. If it was COLD I think I would want the bypass to work in the event the oil could not be pushed through the filter. I think its choices..............push unfiltered oil though the motor....................or...........no oil at all :(

I'm sure you did this but then again we all make mistakes, look at my tranny for one thing. :) Some engine building lubes contain tiny bits of metal in them, good for the first starts. After you got it dialed in did you let it run for 30mins then change the oil? All those tiny metal bits clog the oil filter.

yep. unfiltered or none.
