Ok, lets start off by sayiing my stock 160,000 mile wagoneer seems to run good. But yesterday i could not back up my driveway in reverse. In its 50 ft long run and a lift of 10 ft from begining to end. I was shocked that it would not back up this climb. It just struggled with the gas pedal mashed at a very low RPM. Why the low rpm and why did it not move?? I checked the trans and the fluid looked "ok". Why do you think a normal running wag would do this?? Is it the trans?? Or a low hp engine?? Thanks in advance. Tony

My 83 wouldn't pull us out of some New Mexico desert in 4WH(no tire spin, just sat there). 4WL and a couple of rev/drive/rev/drive got us on our way. Just not enough horse power.

Will it go up the driveway in the forward direction? If so then it sounds like tranny. If not are there other drivability problems? Was the engine warmed up when you tried this? Was it hot? Is the tranny fluid level correct?

It could be your low/reverse band; if that's slipping, your car won't go backwards.
Or you could have a bad viscous coupler, if it does it in Drive as well.

Humm viscous coupler....would that also cause slow-to-go foward movement after its been sitting awhile?

seriously, that sounds like a very modest grade, does not sound like a tired engine... especially if it goes good in drive... does it?

I have not had any problem with it going in drive. But I have checked the tranny fluid and it ok, but I wonder if I need to service the tranny. When it sits for a week or so, it does act sluuggish to go into reverse. When the problem happened it was a 95 degree day and I was just coming home from driving to town. Thanks for all of your suggetions.
