Ok fellas on my 76 how hard is it too switch over to a one wire alternator and which alternator will fit it. And will the TFI go on my 76. Ive got the better coil already and 10mm wires I was just wondering if the cap will fit.

The alt: I have a 70 wag so I don't know if the story is the same. I went into kragen said "I need a GM internally regulated ALT and the pig tail to go with it" For the first time in my history with them they actually hired someone with a clue - and I got an alt. Had to shave about 1/16 off the pivot side of the alt (If I'd had better time/tools I would've widened out the bracket) Then using my trusty hammer I adjusted the top bracket to clear the ALT fan, installed the new belt and was underway. (For about 30 miles till the new belt broke in BFE there by causing us to walk a loooong way back cause I didn't have a spare)
As for the TFI not positive, but everything I've read says if it's a 360 it'll fit. Contact Crazy Jeepman for the official low down on that.
That's all I got to say bout' that. :D

just get the large base, rotor and cap from a mid 80's 460. The truck I used for part lookup was an '84 F350 with a 460. The base rotor and cap drop right on. You need the bigger cap as the TFI puts out enough juice to cause arcing problems in the smaller cap.

Franakenstein...the TFI upgrade is the same for a 401 as it is for a 360, use your old distributor and I used the parts off an 86 F350. BTW how's the Holley working out for you?

Cool So anyone else care to comnet on the alternator, And Baldy the thing runs like a champ now but Ive tore up so many brake lines I havent drove it yet. I pulled all brake components off today , calipers, back drums, master cylinder, booster etc. It seems every line with the large stle end wouldnt come off to save a life. Rustys has got my correct brake line kit on the way. then Ive got a guy making all new hard lines sso hpefully by next weekend ill be able to throw you thru the windsheild.

I did a Summit 90 amp alternator replacement.
Had to drill the pivot hole to 7/16.
had to make a longer spacer too. I think it was 3 3/4. Get rid of the external regulator and wireing.
Run a fused 8 gauge wire to the positive terminal on your battery or starter solinoid.......phil

On a 76 if it is stock, you have the Prestolight dizy, NOT Motocraft 78+
compatable unless you swap out the dizy for a 78+ unit. On alts
you may have a Delco to start out with if so pretty much any SI-10
SI-12 and SI-15 units should drop right in. But Jeep also lists the
Motocraft and Motorola alts a origional equipment so ?? what do you
have to start out with ? Why do you want to go single wire ? also
the highest output alt pre 80 was the 63 amp unit, unless you
want to analize or take the risk of over loading the harness I would
stay in that range. You could potentially use a CS-130 newer style
that would drop right in the place of a SI unit and AC offers a adapter
plug to plug in the unit without slicing anf dicing your harness.

Thats what I was afraid of on the Dist. and I really dont want to swap in a new one at this time although I thought I read a post about just buying a rebuilt 78 for $50. I may check into it. So basically I got a itty bity dizy and the 78 had about a half inch larger base.Hmmm. And as for the alt I guess Ill have to think that one over too. I got to much stuff dissasembled to start any new projects. lol
