Looking at a 78 j10, guy wants a good price for it and claims its due to the 401. How much does this add to the price? thanks

Depends on the condition of the 401. If it is a great runner then maybe alot. If it is a poor or non running 401 then maybe a couple of hundred if that. 401's are nice but if they are shot then they are scrap price in mybook. My 360 runs circles around my 401.
Then again I am building a 401 now that should do circles around my 360. I'm doing a 401 because it was free and is already sitting on a stand taking up space in the garage.

I would say that it will add $200 to $500 to the price if it is running.

Of course if you happen to be looking for FSJ's in southwestern Colorado... this logic is null & void because 401's are the only engine option. Supply outweighs demand and the prices all drop for 401's.

ok thanks for the info, were 401s the only dealer option in SW Colorado, or the only option for people that want power in the mts?

Well, I think most the 401 equipped FSJs east of the CO and NE border got rusted down from doing duty in the salt lands where snow flies and from the salt air along the Atlantic seaboard and Gulf Coast myself. One of the reasons there are a fair number of them around here is they haven't all melted into an iron oxide heap.

I also think that a 401 in a FSJ only adds value if the buyer thinks it does. If the seller adds enough value to it, it may just take longer to sell. Supply and demand. Lately, I have seen a lot of chit chat about 401s and getting hands on them that it is probably inflating the value... Just like Rhino grilles on eBay in 05 and 06. :p

It really depends on what you want to do with it that determines how much extra it's going to be worth. There is plenty you can do with a 360 to build equivalent power for not much money. At the other end of the spectrum, if the 401 is still at std bore and you want to build one heck of small block then what would it be costing you to add a forged crank and rods, stroked to a 360? Priced any forged stroker cranks for other motors, they darn sure ain't cheap. But if you are just buying it to replace a 360 and not planning to even have it balanced then I wouldn't pay more then $200 extra over the cost of a 360.

Probably true. Not an option, but the trend was the same around Lake Tahoe and the Sierras. The 401 was ideal for traveling and towing through the mountains.

I was at the Carson City PNP while traveling through towns and they had 5 wags and one Chero. All but one were 401's.

According to some price guides, a 401 may add 10-15% to the value.
