First I should introduce myself, I suppose. I have an 89 Grand Wagonner w/ a 360: white, faux wood and very clean for stock. It is a daily driver for my SWMBO.

Well, all of the sudden, the 25 amp AC fan fuse is blowing. Before it does, I hear a buzz from the AC control panel adn POOF--all goes dead.

I checked the resistor packs for both the AC and the heat circuit as well as the blowers for both and they are fine. Seems the gremlin is actually in that control switch.

Yet, I can see no obvious relay that might be the culprit. I am at a loss and welcome any advice. Do these controls tend to short out? Can I clean/rebuild or should I just replace?

Due to our recent onslaught of hurricanes, I need to resolve this quickly.

Thanks,

I have not actually seen the switch from an 89 but my 75, 76 and 79 have a rheostat type, ac/blower speed switch. It is relatively expensive, I think mine was 25.00 give or take a couple of dollars.

The last time it acted up, I pulled it out and hosed it down with electical parts cleaner while rotating the knob through the full range. Then I hosed it down again to wash out any debris.

Another time, the switch was rotating in the panel which caused a couple of the wires to touch one another. I though the loose, rubbery feel when turning the knob was the knob itself.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have checked the fan speed switches and they seem OK. The problem seems to be in the mode switch.

I think I;ll try and change that whole thing and be done with it.
