Anyone have one of these? I really need to move my spare outta the cargo area, and I would also like to add some aux. lights and whatnot. Did anyone notice a feeling of top heaviness after adding one? I am assuming it will create some drag and lessen gas mileage, but by how much? Also, what would be the ideal size if I was going to put a spare tire (probally up to 31") snow shovel, and some chains or tow straps?

I had one on the bargain beater cherokee, and will be installing a new one shortly. We sell them on our site, and remember you get a discount if you mention you are an IFSJA member. They are plenty strong. I had mine up there with a 35" tire for a while, and held up well.

A buddy of mine has a Surco Rack that he switches between his ZJ and YJ-7. It holds a 35" spare and some lights quite nicely, however you have to buy or fab all the mounts& tabs.
Not sure of the dimensions but it looks great and adds alot of character to the rig.

I've got a full length Tad Rack on my Chero and I love it, I can hear the wind from time to time and I can feel it when big rigs pass but I dunno if that's due to the rack or not.

One thing you have to watch since you get snow is when it builds up between the rack& the roof or any slush that freezes there as it can randomly dislodge and surprise the Prius behind you:drivin:

For the mounts, we use the gutter-rail mounts.

what would be the plus for going that route instead of making up mount's that use the existing hole's from the factory mounts

I had one on my Jeep and theyre plenty strong it held up the entire weight of the Jeep when i rolled it. The roof bent more than the rack. Also with you still being stick height i dont think youll notice any tippiness.

There is probally a 3-4 inch lift in the future.

Ive got a six inch and i would have used the rack if i was camping or mild stuff but for serious offroad i didnt want to use it just to keep center of gravity as low as possible.

the weight of the rack won't change your c.o.g. due to the lightweight aluminum.
For the mounts, either work well. We carry the gutter mount kit for folks that can't / don't want to fab up mounts for the stock holes. Lots of people we encounter like parts to bolt on quickly and be easily removed.

hear's another one for ya. do you think the roof mounts would hold up to a 31 to 33 tire being up there with occasional camping gear or would you suggest the gutter mounts

The roof mounts will hold fine assuming you install backing plates for the mounts inside the roof. Otherwise, I'd go with the gutter mounts and plug the holes.

Randy, which size (or Surco model) did you buy for your rig? Looks to be the perfect length.
